How do I update my policy after a driving conviction?

This article is for Marshmallow policyholders who have received a motoring conviction and need to know how it affects their policy.

Updated this week

What counts as a motoring conviction?

A motoring conviction is when you’ve broken a driving-related law and received a legal penalty. Examples include:

  • Penalty points (which can stay on your licence for 4–11 years)

  • Fixed Penalty Notices (for speeding or other offences)

  • Court summons

  • Driving bans

You must tell us about any motoring convictions you receive during your policy, even if they seem minor.

Do I need to declare a conviction?

Yes. We need to know about all convictions from the past 5 years. This applies even if:

  • The conviction has already expired on your licence (but was within the last 5 years)

  • The case is still pending – in this case, use the offence date

If you don’t declare a conviction, your cover may not be valid.

How do I update my policy with a conviction?

Updating your policy depends on how your driving licence was set up with us:

If you used MyLicence when buying your policy

  • You don’t need to manually add convictions during your policy.

  • Any new convictions will automatically appear when your policy renews.

If you did not use MyLicence

You’ll need to update us with:

  1. The conviction code (e.g., SP30 for speeding)

  2. The month and year of the offence

We’ll then update your policy and confirm any changes to your premium.

What if I have a driving ban?

If you receive a driving ban (even a temporary one), we unfortunately can’t continue your cover. Your policy will need to be cancelled.

Are there convictions Marshmallow cannot cover?

Yes. Some convictions mean we can’t insure you, even if you’re already mid-policy. These include:

  • Drink or drug driving offences (e.g., DR10, DR80)

  • Driving uninsured (IN10)

  • Dangerous or careless driving offences (CD or DD codes)

  • Totting up disqualification (TT99)

If you receive one of these, your policy will need to be cancelled.

Will my price change?

Adding a conviction may increase your premium. This depends on the type of conviction and your overall driving history.

  • If you’re on Original or Plus plans, there are no admin fees for changes.

  • If you’re on Lightest or Essential plans, a £25 fee applies to most policy changes.

We’ll always show you the updated price before making any changes.

Key things to remember

  • Always declare new motoring convictions within 5 years.

  • Driving bans and certain conviction codes mean we can’t continue cover.

  • If you used MyLicence, new convictions are automatically picked up at renewal.

  • Declaring convictions promptly keeps your insurance valid and avoids problems if you need to claim.
