What is MyLicence?
MyLicence is a secure way for Marshmallow to check your driving history directly with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency).
When you enter your driving licence number during your quote, MyLicence lets us see:
Your motoring convictions (such as speeding points)
Your address details
Your driving history
This means you do not need to enter every detail manually. The information comes straight from the DVLA.
Why should I use MyLicence?
Using MyLicence makes buying insurance easier and more accurate:
Faster quotes – You can get a price without needing to remember your full driving history.
Fairer premiums – We can calculate your price using the most up-to-date DVLA information.
Fewer surprises – Any convictions are included automatically, so you do not need to update us later.
It also helps reduce mistakes. For example, if a conviction is not declared, it could affect your cover. With MyLicence, convictions are included automatically.
When do I provide my driving licence number?
You will be asked for your driving licence number:
When getting your quote – either through a price comparison website or directly on our site.
After you have received your quote – if you did not add it straight away, you can complete the MyLicence check later in your Marshmallow account.
What happens if I don’t use MyLicence?
MyLicence is optional. You can still buy a policy without it, but:
You will need to enter all your conviction and licence details manually.
If anything is missed or incorrect, it could affect your cover.
You will need to update us manually if you receive new convictions during your policy.
What if my MyLicence check doesn’t work?
Sometimes the check can fail. This usually happens if:
Your driving licence number is not 16 characters.
The surname on your quote does not match the surname on your driving licence. The first 5 letters of your driving licence number are usually based on your surname, so this is the most common reason the check does not work.
You do not currently have a UK driving licence.
If your surname does not match, you can update the surname on your quote so it matches your driving licence.
If you do not have a UK driving licence, you can update your quote to show this. You will not be asked to complete a licence check, and you can enter your licence and conviction details manually instead.
If the check fails for another reason, you will be asked to try again or enter the details manually.
Will MyLicence affect my renewal?
Yes. If you signed up with MyLicence, your driving history will refresh automatically when you renew. This means:
Any new convictions will be included in your renewal price.
You will not need to make manual updates during your policy. It is all done automatically.
