Can I switch my insurance plan mid-policy?

This article is for Marshmallow policyholders who want to know if they can move to a different plan before their renewal date.

Updated this week

At Marshmallow, we offer four fully comprehensive car insurance plans:

  • Marshmallow Lightest – our most affordable option with essential cover.

  • Marshmallow Essential – includes everything in Lightest, plus extra protection such as uninsured driver and vandalism cover.

  • Marshmallow Original – builds on Essential with further benefits like windscreen cover, personal items, and medical expenses.

  • Marshmallow Plus – our most complete plan with additional bundled add-ons, such as Motor Legal Protection and Breakdown Cover.

Which plan changes are possible?

You can switch between Lightest, Essential, and Original plans mid-policy or at renewal.

  • From Lightest or Essential → Original (upgrade to gain more cover)

  • From Original → Essential or Lightest (downgrade to a simpler plan)

  • From Lightest ↔ Essential (move between these two)

Important: Changes to or from Marshmallow Plus are not available. If you’re already on Plus, you’ll need to wait until your renewal date to consider other options.

How can I change my plan?

  1. Check your current plan

    • Within the your Marshmallow app see which plan you’re on.

  2. Contact our team

    • Plan changes can’t be made directly in the app and so if you’d like to switch, please speak with our customer support team.

  3. Understand how pricing works

    • There are no admin fees for changing plans on Marshmallow Original or Plus policies.

    • For Lightest and Essential, some changes may include a £25 adjustment fee.

    • If your premium increases or decreases after switching plans, your monthly payments will update accordingly.

When is the best time to make a change?

  • Mid-term adjustments (MTAs): You can move between Lightest, Essential, and Original at any point during your policy term.

  • Renewal window: In the 14 days before your renewal, you’ll also be able to compare plans and select a new one for the next year.
