How can I buy insurance for my van?

This article is for anyone looking to purchase van insurance with Marshmallow.

Updated this week

Where to buy

You can get a Marshmallow van insurance policy in two simple ways:

  • Directly on our websitemarshmallow.com/van-insurance

  • Through comparison sites – such as Compare the Market, Quotezone, Confused, and GoCompare

When you apply, we’ll ask for details about:

  • You and any additional drivers

  • Your van (make, model, age, and value)

  • How you plan to use the van (personal or for work)

Who can apply

To get a van policy with us, you’ll need to meet some requirements:

  • Be aged 21–75 and have at least 3 years of driving experience

  • Hold a full UK or international driving licence (we don’t cover provisional licences)

  • Drive a van that:

    • Weighs less than 3.5 tonnes

    • Has a value under £90,000

    • Has no more than one modification

We also allow up to 4 additional drivers on your policy.

What types of cover are available

When you buy your policy, you’ll choose between two cover types:

  • Social, Domestic, Pleasure & Commuting (SDPC)

    • Perfect if you use your van like a car, for personal trips and commuting to work.

    • Covers you for up to 25,000 miles per year.

  • Carriage of Own Goods (COOG)

    • Designed for self-employed tradespeople like plumbers, carpenters, and electricians.

    • Covers your van while carrying your own tools and equipment.

    • Please note: the tools themselves aren’t covered if lost or damaged.

We don’t cover vans used for delivery driving (Hire & Reward) or haulage.

What’s included in a van insurance policy

Our van policy offers one standard comprehensive plan, which is similar to our Marshmallow Original car cover. You’ll be covered for:

  • Accidental damage

  • Fire and theft

  • Third-party injury and property damage

  • A courtesy car (or van, if available) while yours is repaired

You can also choose add-ons such as:

  • Breakdown cover

  • Motor legal protection

  • Protected no-claims discount

  • Courtesy car upgrade for theft or total loss

Paying for your policy

You can pay for your van insurance in two ways:

  • Monthly instalments – paid by direct debit

  • Annual payment – a one-off payment, often at a discounted price

What documents you might need

Just like car insurance, we may ask you to provide:

  • Proof of address

  • Proof of occupation

  • V5 logbook (vehicle registration document)

In some cases, we might also request proof of no claims discount (NCD).
