What is Motor Legal Protection?

Motor Legal Protection (MLP) is an optional add-on to your car insurance. It covers your legal expenses if you're in a non-fault accident or if you're accused of a driving offence.

MLP provides legal support to help you recover costs or defend yourself, so you're not left out of pocket after an incident that wasn't your fault.

What does MLP cover?

You’ll receive legal cover up to the limits below:

1. Uninsured Loss Recovery

Covers legal costs up to £100,000 to claim compensation for:

  • Vehicle damage

  • Personal injury

  • Lost earnings

  • Personal belongings

2. Vehicle Hire, Repair and Storage Charges

Up to £50,000 if you can't recover the charges from the third party after a non-fault accident.

3. Motor Prosecution Defence

Up to £100,000 in legal costs if you're accused of a driving offence and there’s a reasonable chance of success (more than 50%).

4. Vehicle Identity Theft

Up to £100,000 for legal costs to challenge fines or defend criminal action if someone uses your vehicle registration without permission.

Who is covered?

  • The main policyholder

  • Any additional drivers named on your policy

Who provides the legal support?

  • Legal assistance is provided by Winn Solicitors.

  • The cover is underwritten by Financial & Legal Insurance Company Ltd.

What is not covered?

  • Accidents where you were at fault

  • Retrospective claims (unless reviewed and approved)

  • Legal costs without written approval from Winn Solicitors

  • Claims with less than a 51% chance of success

  • Compensation for damages (this must be paid by the third party)
