What vehicle usage options are available for cars?

This article is for Marshmallow customers insuring a car. Your vehicle usage type decides what journeys your policy covers.

Updated this week

1. Just social (SDP – Social, Domestic & Pleasure)

  • Covers you and any named drivers for personal driving outside of work.

  • Examples: visiting friends, shopping, running errands, or leisure trips.

  • Does not include commuting or any work-related driving.

2. I drive to and from work (SDPC – Social, Domestic, Pleasure & Commuting)

  • Covers all social driving plus commuting to a fixed place of work.

  • Example: driving daily to the same office, shop, or workplace.

  • Included as standard on all Marshmallow car policies at no extra cost.

3. I use it for work (Business Class 1)

  • Covers business travel to multiple work locations.

  • Includes social use and commuting.

  • Covers you and your spouse/partner (if named on the policy) for business use.

  • Other named drivers are covered for social + commuting only.

What’s not covered under Business Class 1:

  • Courier or delivery driving.

  • Carrying passengers for work (e.g. taxi, private hire).

  • Carrying work-related tools or goods.

4. Commercial use

  • Marshmallow does not offer commercial cover for cars.

  • Commercial use includes: private hire taxis, driving instructors, couriers, or delivery drivers.

  • If you use your car this way without the right cover, any claim may be rejected and it could affect future insurance.
