How do I update the car on my policy?

This article is for Marshmallow customers who want to change the car insured on their policy.

Updated yesterday

You can easily update the car on your policy using the Marshmallow app. This process is called a Mid-Term Adjustment (MTA)—it allows you to change details on your policy after it has started.

How to change your car in the Marshmallow app

Follow these steps to change your vehicle:

  1. Open the Marshmallow app.

  2. Tap Manage policy.

  3. Select Manage your vehicle.

  4. Tap Change car at the top.

  5. Follow the instructions to enter your new car details.

If you're having any issues updating your vehicle in the app, please contact our Customer Support team.

Will I be charged a fee?

It depends on your policy type:

Policy type

Vehicle change fee

Marshmallow Lightest

£25 admin fee

Marshmallow Essential

£25 admin fee

Marshmallow Original

No admin fee

Marshmallow Plus

No admin fee

Things to check before submitting your new car details

Make sure to double-check the following before confirming your change:

  • Registration plate: Watch out for typos—especially between similar characters like O and 0.

  • Make and model: Ensure your vehicle details match exactly what’s listed in the DVLA records.

  • Ownership eligibility: You must have an insurable interest in the car. See accepted ownership types below.

  • Timing: If you want the change to happen at a specific time of day, contact our support team—we can schedule this for you.

  • Frequency limits: There is a limit to how many times you can change your vehicle during a policy term. Contact us if you’ve reached this limit.

Can I insure any vehicle?

We can only insure cars registered in the UK. Imported vehicles may be eligible if they have already been registered in the UK.

You cannot switch from a car to a van (or vice versa) within your policy.

Do I need to be the owner of the vehicle?

No, but you must have insurable interest—meaning you would suffer financial loss if the vehicle was damaged or stolen.

Here are ownership combinations we accept:

Legal owner

Registered keeper

What happens to my old car?

As soon as your new car becomes active on the policy, your old car is no longer insured. If you need to insure both cars at once, you'll need to either create a MultiCar account, if eligible, or purchase a new second policy.

Can I schedule the change for a specific date or time?

Yes. The default change time is 00:01 on your selected date. If you need the change to happen at a specific time, contact Customer Support and we can set this for you.
