Why has my quote price gone up?

This article is for customers who have already received a car insurance quote from Marshmallow and are returning to purchase it.

Updated this week

If your quote price is different the second time you check it, we understand that can be frustrating. This change can happen for a few reasons, and we'll explain each one clearly.

1. Your quote was based on a specific time and date

We use real-time pricing, which means quote prices update constantly based on many different factors—like demand, risk patterns, and market trends.

When you first received your quote, it was calculated using the information you gave us at that exact time. If you return later (even a day or two later), the price might have changed due to our updated pricing data.

Tip: The only way to lock in the exact quote you first receive is to purchase it right away.

2. You found your quote on a comparison site

If you originally got your quote from a comparison website (like Go Compare or Compare the Market), that price was based on a simpler set of questions.

When you click through to our site to finish your quote, we ask a few more detailed questions to give you a final, accurate price. These details can sometimes lead to an increase.

Why? More complete information helps us price your policy fairly and accurately.

3. Some of your answers changed

If you’ve edited anything about your quote—like your address, No Claims Discount, or added extra cover options—your price will be recalculated.

Even small changes can affect your premium, so it’s normal for the updated quote to be higher (or lower) than what you first saw.

4. You changed your policy start date

Your quote price is also linked to the date your policy starts. If you change this date when purchasing, the price may be different. This is because risk levels can vary depending on when your cover begins.

Can Marshmallow match my old quote?

Unfortunately, we’re not able to manually adjust or honour a previous quote if the price has changed. All prices are generated automatically based on real-time data and your latest answers.
