Can I transfer my Marshmallow policy to someone else?

This article is for customers who want to know if they can switch the policyholder to another person.

Policyholder transfers are not allowed

Once a policy is purchased with Marshmallow, it's not possible to transfer it to another person. This includes:

  • Transferring the policy to your spouse, partner, or family member

  • Switching the policy to match the main driver or vehicle owner

  • Changing the name on the policy to a friend or flatmate

This is because Marshmallow calculates insurance quotes based on the individual policyholder's:

  • Driving history

  • Credit profile

  • Car details (such as value, age, and engine size)

Each policy is uniquely tailored, so transferring it would undermine the accuracy and fairness of the cover.

What to do instead

If you need a different person to hold the insurance (for example, your spouse), you will need to:

  1. Cancel your existing policy in your Marshmallow account.

  2. Ask the new policyholder to create a new quote and purchase a separate policy in their name.

Tip: Make sure the new quote uses their full and accurate personal and vehicle details.

Can someone else be the main driver?

Yes — as long as the policyholder still has an insurable interest in the vehicle (for example, they live at the same address and are a regular user), another person can be listed as the main driver. You do not need to cancel the policy if:

  • Your spouse drives the car more frequently

  • The car is in your spouse’s name but you're the policyholder

This is acceptable as long as all details provided during sign-up were accurate.
