What is a V5 document?

A V5, also known as a V5C or Vehicle Logbook, is a legal document issued by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). It confirms who the registered keeper of a vehicle is and includes important vehicle details like:

  • Vehicle make and model

  • Engine size and fuel type

  • Date of first registration

  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

  • Registered keeper’s name and address

It’s essential when buying or selling a vehicle, or making updates to vehicle details.

Why do you need my V5?

We ask for your V5 so we can:

  • Confirm who the registered keeper is

  • Check that the vehicle matches your policy

  • Make sure all details are up-to-date

This helps us ensure your cover is correct and active.

Who should the V5 be registered to?

We can accept the V5 if it’s in the name of:

  • You, the policyholder

  • Your spouse, civil partner, or cohabiting partner

  • Your parent, but only if you both live at the same address

  • A vehicle leasing company (12-month minimum lease)

  • Your employer, provided you're not in the healthcare or fast food industries

We may decline if the V5 is in the name of:

  • A friend, sibling, or other relative

  • A parent who does not live at the same address as you

  • A company that is not owned by you or your partner

If you’re unsure who the V5 should be under, speak to our customer support team.
