Eligibility Rules for Provisional Licence Holders

To be added to a policy, provisional licence holders must meet all of the following:

  • Be 21 to 40 years old when added

    • If they’re the only person on the policy with a provisional licence, they can be over 40

  • Be a UK resident

  • Not have an excluded occupation or have had insurance refused or cancelled

  • Not be over 75 years old

  • Must not have passed their test in Albania or Romania (due to licensing regulations)


Driving Rules for Learner Drivers

To legally drive on a provisional licence in the UK, the driver must:

  • Display ‘L’ plates on the vehicle

  • Be supervised at all times by someone who:

    • Is at least 21 years old

    • Has held a full licence for 3+ years (from the UK, EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein)

    • Is qualified for the vehicle type (e.g., manual licence if supervising in a manual car)

  • Drive only vehicles without modifications


Are Driving Tests Covered?

Yes, but only if:

  • The driver is listed on the policy

  • They use their own vehicle (not an instructor’s or test centre car)


Costs and Coverage

  • A £25 fee applies on Lightest and Essential plans when adding any additional driver

  • Learner drivers have the same cover as full licence holders while following all provisional licence rules
