When creating an assignment in Quiz mode, you can also turn on Safe mode. The Safe mode feature helps you, as a teacher, discover if a student is trying to leave the quiz. With Safe mode on, you can see if and when a student leaves the quiz. If a student leaves the quiz, it is paused, and the student gets locked out of the assignment; the student can only continue working on the quiz once you have started it for them again.

It helps if you know how the Quiz mode works before turning on Safe mode; take a look at our guide on Quiz mode here!

When you create an assignment, you turn on Safe mode in the last step. When you turn on Quiz mode, the option to turn on Safe mode appears.

You start the quiz by clicking the Start-button. To see the Quiz settings, go to the heatmap by clicking anywhere on the quiz.

In the quiz settings, you can Start, Pause, and End the exam for your students. To the left of the students' names, you can choose which students to Start, Pause, or End the quiz for. At the top left, you can Start, Pause, or End the quiz for all students simultaneously.

For example, if you want to end the quiz for some students who are done, you can click the End-button next to these students. The results will then be shared with these students, and they can see which questions they have answered right and wrong.

Click the exlamation point to see if a student has left the quiz. To the right of the student's name you are able to see at what time the student left the quiz. If a student has left multiple times, you can see how many times they left the quiz, and if you hover the cursor over this for a few seconds, you can see the timestamps of when the student left.

If a student tries to leave the quiz by, for example, going to another website, this message will pop up:

If a student tries to leave the quiz by clicking the arrow in the top left corner, they will get the option to stay in the quiz, and this message will appear:

If the student decides to leave the quiz, it will be paused. The student will be locked out of the quiz, and they will have to ask you to start it again.

When a student leaves the quiz, you will get a notification.

To start the quiz for the student again, go to the quiz settings and click the Start-button to the left of the student's name.
