Transportation of Ash & Debris to Central Maui Landfill

The procedures for receiving debris at the Permanent Disposal Site (PDS) will be similar to those used at the temporary site in Olowalu. As debris is removed from Lahaina properties, it is loaded into dump trucks lined with plastic, wetted to prevent airborne particles, and securely wrapped to maintain containment and moisture levels. This process helps minimize dust during transport and disposal.

Ash & Debris + Air Quality Monitoring

At the PDS, additional water will be applied as needed to keep the debris moist. Once the debris is placed, it will be covered with dirt or another Department of Health (DOH)-approved material to further reduce windblown dust and litter. Additionally, air quality monitoring will be implemented at the PDS to ensure any impacts are minimized. The Department of Environmental Management’s Solid Waste Division (DEM/SWD) is also in discussions with the State DOH regarding the possible use of their PurpleAir monitors in addition to those included in the PDS operations contract.
