Fire Hazard Mitigation Community Meeting on June 16, 2025

The County of Maui will hold a meeting for the Lahaina community on fire prevention, mitigation and evacuation planning at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2025, at the Princess Nāhiʻenaʻena Elementary School cafeteria.

Topics to be discussed include:

• Updates from the County’s Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) on evacuation modeling and wildfire hazard mitigation for Lahaina.

• A presentation from the County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety (MFD) on fire mitigation strategies.

• A presentation from Hawaiian Electric Co. on wildfire mitigation plans including utility pole hardening.

• A presentation from the Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization on Firewise communities and Fire Aside software, which aids in individual defensible space inspections.

The meeting is a follow-up and expansion of presentations given by MFD and MEMA at the May 7 Lahaina Community Meeting. During that meeting, MEMA Operation Coordination Section Chief Kono Davis provided information on the Genasys Protect evacuation management and notification app, and Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Otsubo presented on the department’s wildfire mitigation plan.

The June 16 meeting will be livestreamed on the County of Maui’s Facebook page; no account is needed to view. A live broadcast of the meeting will also be shown on Akakū: Maui Community Media, Channel 53.
