Address validation best practices

We recommend that you write addresses in all uppercase letters. If possible, addresses should have no more than five lines.

The addressee’s full legal name (the name that corresponds to the addressee’s government-issued identification - i.e., the addressee’s first name, middle initial (if applicable), and last name) and complete address must appear legibly with Roman letters and Arabic numerals, all placed lengthwise on one side of the item. For parcels, addresses should also appear on a separate slip enclosed in the parcel.

The last line of the address block area must include only the complete country name (no abbreviations) written in uppercase letters.

Sequence of information for the destination address

  • LINE 1: ADDRESSEE'S FULL LEGAL NAME

  • LINE 2: STREET ADDRESS OR POST OFFICE BOX NUMBER

  • LINE 3: CITY OR TOWN NAME, OTHER PRINCIPAL SUBDIVISION (i.e. PROVINCE, STATE, COUNTY, ETC.) AND POSTAL CODE (IF KNOWN) (Note: in some countries, the postal code may precede the city or town name)

  • LINE 4: COUNTRY NAME (UPPERCASE LETTERS IN ENGLISH)
