When starting an effective topical acne treatment, some people can experience an initial worsening of the condition before things begin to improve! Read below (or check out this blog) to learn why this happens and what you can do about it.

Why Is My Skin Getting Worse? Experiencing a few more breakouts is totally normal when starting a new acne treatment. The reason is that acne medications cause rapid destruction of acne bacteria, which can cause more inflammation and sometimes result in an initial "worsening" of the condition (sometimes called a "purge").

What To Do About it: We know this can be a frustrating part of the process, but the best thing to do is to continue with your current routine but reduce the amount of the treatment cream that you apply at night. Doing that should help your skin calm down and your breakouts should start to subside.

What To Expect: If you do begin to experience an initial "purge", it's important not to freak out and know that this is all part of the process. For some people, things need o get worse before they get better. These initial breakouts should begin to subside within a few weeks of consistent use of your products and things should get better from there!

Additional Tips:

  • Treatment Application: Make sure to apply your products to your entire face and not just single pimples (avoiding the sensitive areas around the eyes, lips, and corners of the nose).

  • Skin Tips: If you are an MDacne subscriber, you can find a lot of helpful diet and lifestyle tips in the Clear Skin Academy on your app website, which has a lot of helpful diet and lifestyle tips. One thing you'll read is that reducing consumption of dairy and refined carbohydrates can sometimes help with acne.

MDacne subscribers have access to ongoing chat support with a dermatologist and free fine-tuning of their product ingredients if needed to ensure they achieve the best results. If this initial worsening of the condition does not begin to subside within a few weeks, that may indicate that your treatment and/or products could benefit from some changes, and we're here to help!
