Does it get worse before it get better?

A few more pimples/breakouts is totally normal when starting a new acne treatment, and things can sometimes get worse before they get better! The reason is that the potent acne-fighting products cause a rapid destruction of acne bacteria, which can lead to more inflammation and sometimes result in an initial "worsening" of the condition (sometimes called acne "purging".)ย

We know this can be a frustrating part of the process, but the good news is that it's temporary! This initial breakout, while intense, usually does not last beyond 4 weeks, at which point things should begin to improve. Regular, untreated breakouts, on the other hand, may last for several months or even years.ย

The dermatologist guidelines for acne care suggest that patients with initial acne flare-ups should continue the treatment as this effect is a sign that improvement is pending. It may be counter-intuitive, but the best way to reduce skin purging is to continue with the same acne treatment. The best way to help calm this effect is to follow the advice above, while reducing the application amount and frequency.
