Updated over a month ago

What is SEO+?

Meadow's SEO+ feature designed to improve your Meadow e-commerce menu's search engine optimization (SEO) and performance. It introduces enhancements that make your site faster, more efficient, and easier to discover online.

What does SEO+ include?

  1. Performance Improvements

    • Faster Load Times: Improved page speed for better user experience and higher search rankings.

    • Optimized Images: Images load more responsively across devices.

    • Streamlined Product Pages: Product detail pages are quicker and more responsive.

  2. SEO-Specific Features

    • Product Metadata: Automatically updates the information search engines use to understand your product pages, such as the product's name, brand, and description, ensuring accurate and relevant details appear in search results (and that you show up when customers search for these terms).

    • Sitemap Integration:

      • A user- and bot-readable Sitemap is automatically generated and linked in the footer of your menu.

      • Advanced users can also enable a sitemap.xml for better indexing and tracking through Google Search Console.

    • Googlebot Optimizations:

      • Pre-rendered HTML prevents timeout errors during indexing.

      • Structured data (JSON+LD) integrates product details into Google Shopping.

    • SEO Guidelines Compliance:

      • Honest practices that follow best SEO standards.

      • Redirects for missing product pages to maintain site integrity.

How to Get Started

When SEO+ is enabled, your website gains significant performance and visibility benefits. However, for Google to effectively crawl and index your site, there are a few steps to follow to ensure success.

Before Indexing Your Website

  1. Set Up Google Search Console (GSC): If you haven’t done so, configure GSC for your site to monitor indexing status (it's free).

  2. Add Meadow Pre-connect (Optional but Recommended): Improve page load speed and indexing success by adding Meadow pre-connect code to your website’s header.

    Example Code:

    <head> <!-- Meadow Pre-connect --> <link rel="preconnect" href="https://daffodil.getmeadow.com" /> <link rel="preconnect" href="https://embed.getmeadow.com" /> </head>

    Platform-specific guides:

  3. Test a Product Link: Use GSC’s Inspect URL tool on a random product link (available via the share link widget in the menu). This helps identify potential issues before indexing your entire site.

After Initial Validation

  1. Request Meadow Support to enable SEO+ for you in the Help Chat.

  2. (Optional but recommended) Request crawling of your sitemap in GSC:

    • Inspect URL → Request Indexing for https://example.com/menu.html?meadow-page=sitemap.

  3. Monitor crawling in GSC and manually re-request crawling for any failed pages.

  4. Set up sitemap.xml for advanced indexing and tracking (below)

Sitemap.xml Installation Instructions (Optional but Recommended)

Method 1: Setup a Redirect

  1. Send Meadow Support your Domain and Provider.

  2. We will provide a Sitemap URL

  3. Create a 301 or 308 (permanent) redirect on your website provider.

  4. Add the sitemap URL to GSC. Once the redirect is setup go to GSC > Sitemaps and add the URL you just created. After 1-3 days you should see pages start to appear from the sitemap.

Method 2: Manually download sitemap.xml and upload to website

This method requires less technical knowledge but has the drawback that it will not automatically update over time.

  1. Send Meadow Support your Domain and Provider.

  2. We will provide a Sitemap URL.

  3. Download the Sitemap as a file.

  4. Upload sitemap.xml to website provider

  5. Provide URL to GSC.

Verification and Troubleshooting

Verify Indexing Status

  • Use GSC Page InspectLive Test to check how Google interprets the page.

    • Ensure the menu, product pages, and sitemap are visible.

    • For product pages, verify product details are properly displayed.

  • If using sitemap.xml, filter by sitemap in GSC to view the indexing status of specific pages.

Check Search Results

  • Use site:example.com cannabis in Google to see how your page appears in search results.

  • For a clean result free from ads or AI, append &utm=14 to the search URL (learn more here).

Note:

  • 100% Indexing Is Not Guaranteed: SEO+ makes your content available for Google to crawl, but indexing success depends on your site’s content quality, backlinks, hosting performance, and overall SEO efforts.

  • Site Performance Matters: Issues such as poor site performance, excessive popups or other technical barriers can block indexing. Ensure your parent site is optimized and free of obstacles.

  • Content Quality Affects Results: Pages with missing descriptions, duplicate products, or poorly written content may fail to index or produce unclear text snippets in search results.

  • Re-Indexing May Be Required: Some pages might not index on the first attempt. You can use Google Search Console (GSC) to request another crawl.

  • Crawling and Re-Crawling: Once a page is indexed, requesting a re-crawl is more challenging and can take longer. It’s important to validate pages thoroughly before indexing the entire menu.

  • Handling Removed Products: When a product is removed, it will not disappear from GSC but will instead be listed as “Page with Redirect” or occasionally other statuses. This is expected behavior.

  • Compatibility with Google Only: SEO+ is designed to work with Google, as it is the only major search engine capable of inlining iframe content during site crawling.
