The public data feature in Measure Studio lets you monitor public Instagram and TikTok accounts—giving you access to key insights about how other brands or creators are performing, all without needing their login credentials. By analyzing engagement metrics and content trends, you can benchmark your own performance and uncover new opportunities to refine your content strategy.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to use the public data feature specifically for competitor tracking. You’ll learn how to connect public accounts, how that data is displayed across your dashboards, and which tools in Measure Studio can help you get the most out of these insights. Whether you're just getting started or looking to sharpen your analytics approach, this guide will help you use competitor tracking more strategically.
How to Add a Competitor Account
To add a competitor account to Measure Studio, click on the drop down menu from your name in the upper right corner and select "Manage Social Accounts."
Next, click the Add Account button, then select the Public option from the dropdown menu to add a competitor's account.
A pop-up will appear where you can enter the URL of the Instagram or TikTok account you want to track.
Once you’ve added the account, Measure Studio will begin syncing the data, which may take up to 24 hours to complete.
Once Measure Studio has finished syncing the data, you’ll be able to view the competitor’s posts, analyze performance metrics, and include the account in dashboards, post groups, comparisons, and reports—just like you would with your own accounts.
What Can I Do with Competitor Data in Measure Studio?
Once you’ve added a competitor account, you can use that data across several key features in Measure Studio to gain deeper insights and track performance over time.
Dashboards – Add competitor accounts to your custom dashboards to monitor their post performance and compare them side-by-side with your own accounts.
Benchmarks – Use competitor data as a benchmark to see how your metrics stack up against others in your industry or niche.
Post Groups – Include competitor posts in post groups to analyze trends, performance by content type, or specific campaign strategies.
Account Groups – Group competitor accounts together to analyze brands or creators within the same category.
Reports – Feature competitor data in scheduled or on-demand reports to share insights with your team or stakeholders.
Using these tools together gives you a strategic edge, helping you learn from competitors, spot content opportunities, and refine your own content strategy based on real-world comparisons.
Display Competitor Data in Your Dashboard
You can easily keep an eye on your competitor’s performance by displaying their metrics directly on your main dashboard. To do this, simply add their account as a widget—either in graph or table format. This allows you to visualize how their content is performing over time and compare it side-by-side with your own data.
You can customize which metrics to show and filter by specific time ranges or content types to get the insights that matter most to your strategy. It's a great way to track trends, spot opportunities, and stay one step ahead of the competition—all in one place.
Using Competitor Data in Benchmarks
One of the most valuable ways to leverage competitor tracking in Measure Studio is through Benchmarks. This feature allows you to use competitor performance data as a point of comparison against your own accounts.
By including tracked competitor accounts in your benchmarks, you can:
See how your engagement rates, post frequency, and content performance compare to others in your industry or niche
Identify where you're leading or lagging behind in key metrics
This context is especially helpful when building reports or evaluating the success of your content strategy over time. Competitor benchmarks provide an external reference point, helping you make smarter, data-backed decisions.
Using Competitor Data in Post Groups
With Post Groups, you can organize and analyze posts by category, theme, or strategy—and this includes competitor content. Adding competitor posts to your Post Groups helps you compare their performance alongside your own, all in one place.
Here’s how you can use competitor data in Post Groups:
Analyze content trends – Group competitor posts by topic or format to see what types of content are performing best
Compare strategies – Assess how your content stacks up against specific campaigns or seasonal efforts from other brands
Uncover opportunities – Identify patterns in what drives engagement for your competitors and apply those insights to your own content planning
Post Groups make it easy to dig into what’s working for others and apply that knowledge to strengthen your own content strategy.
Using Competitor Data in Account Groups
Account Groups let you organize multiple accounts—whether they’re your own or your competitors'—into custom groups for easier analysis. When you group competitor accounts together, you can get a broader view of how brands or creators within the same category are performing.
Here’s how to use competitor data effectively in Account Groups:
Compare similar brands or creators – Track competitors in the same industry, niche, or content style side by side
Spot trends across a category – See what’s working across a group of accounts rather than focusing on just one
Account Groups are especially useful when you’re monitoring multiple players in a specific space and want to uncover larger trends or patterns.
Using Competitor Data in Reports
Measure Studio’s Reports feature allows you to include competitor data in both scheduled and on-demand reports, making it easy to share competitive insights with your team.
Here’s how competitor data enhances your reporting:
Add context to your performance – Show how your metrics compare to competitors for a more complete performance picture
Support strategic decisions – Use competitor insights to guide planning, content strategy, and goal setting
Whether you're building a one-time report or setting up a recurring one, adding competitor accounts helps turn raw data into strategic, actionable insights.
