Preventing or reversing metabolic syndrome
Updated over 3 years ago

You can prevent, or even reverse, metabolic syndrome by making changes to your lifestyle, such as:

  • eating a healthy, balanced diet including fruit, vegetables and whole grains

  • maintaining a healthy waist circumference

  • losing weight

  • exercising regularly

  • cutting down on alcohol consumption

  • stopping smoking.

All of these actions will help reduce your body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and blood fat and sugar levels, and ultimately help prevent or even reverse metabolic syndrome.

You should always speak with your doctor before beginning an exercise programme or radically changing your diet.

In order to prevent metabolic syndrome, you will also need to have regular physical exams. Your doctor can measure your blood pressure and carry out blood tests that may indicate the early development of metabolic syndrome. Early diagnosis of the condition and early intervention and / or treatment will help reduce longer term health complications.

If necessary, your doctor may prescribe medicine to help control your blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
