This help guide walks you through how you can record Resting Heart Rate in the Huma mobile app

Updated over 3 years ago

Your heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute (bpm). Most adults have a resting heart rate of 60-100 bpm. Infections such as COVID-19 will result in elevation of your resting heart rate. During self-isolation, keep track of this vital sign by measuring your heart rate first thing in the morning and minimum three times daily.

How to record Resting Heart Rate

When it comes to recording your Resting Heart Rate (RHR), there are two options in Huma, manual entry or using the built in camera recording feature (Note, depending on how Huma is setup for you, you may or may not have access to the built in camera recording feature). If you do, we suggest you clarify with your care team as to the preferred method of measurement.

(1) Manual Entry

If you have been provided a dedicated piece of hardware from your care team, you may be expected to use this to measure your RHR.

If you are asked to record your RHR using a dedicated device, please do the following:

  1. Use the dedicated device provided to measure your Resting Heart Rate

  2. Open the Huma app and tap on the 'Add' button present on the Resting Heart Rate module

  3. Input the correct 'Date' and 'Time' and enter the RHR measured

  4. Once done, tap 'Submit'

(2) Built in Resting Heart Rate recording feature

You can also record your Resting Heart Rate using the built in recording feature in Huma. This utilises the camera + flash on the back of your smart phone.

To record your Resting Heart Rate, please do the following:

  1. Open the Huma app on your smart phone

  2. Scroll through your vitals until you find the Resting Heart Rate module, then tap 'Add'

  3. The onscreen instructions will guide you on how to use the built in Resting Heart Rate feature and notify you when to do what

  4. Whilst holding your phone, with the screen facing you, place your index finger on the camera + flash located on the back of your phone. Make sure your finger is completely covering the camera + flash (#TIP: If your phone has a low battery, it might not be possible to use the flash light, the app wont be able to take a measurement. So make sure you have a full battery or that your phone is plugged in to power)

  5. You can check that your finger is in the correct position on the Huma app screen, the square camera image should be filled 'red'. This means the finger is covering the camera (#TIP: For devices with multiple lenses, you may need to adjust to the position of your finger-pad, to ensure you have the correct position for your device)

  6. Once you are ready and in position, tap 'Next' to start the recording process

  7. Try not to press down too hard, rather, press lightly at a consistent pressure to ensure good contact

  8. It's important to keep your finger still and covering the camera

  9. The resting heart rate reading will take approximately 60 seconds and you will see a progress bar in the square, as shown below

  10. When your recording has been completed and is successful, you should see a confirmation screen with a thumbs up and your final Resting Heart Rate reading
