Background
Water is over 90% of your espresso, and it is also the single biggest factor in reducing the need to clean the Meticulous. Unlike traditional espresso machines with a boiler, the Meticulous has a visible stainless steel chamber. Water with sub-optimal mineralization will make any scale build-up obvious. Over-mineralized water will coat the chamber in limescale; water that is too pure can be corrosive and makes flat-tasting coffee.
Preventing scale build-up: use filtered water
Scale is mostly calcium from your water, and prevention is far gentler than removal. Using appropriate filtered water you may only need to do a gentle cleaning of the cylinder every 6-12 months. If you're seeing rough deposits inside the cylinder after only a week or two (run a fingernail over it, roughness is scale), your water is mineral-heavy and filtering it will make a big difference.

Removing buildup
Remove the shower screen and piston head, then raise piston to fully access the inside of the cylinder.
We recommend using rubber kitchen gloves to grip your tools to more easily remove the piston head.
Start mechanical: warm water and a hard toothbrush on the cylinder walls handles light buildup.
Raise the piston to release the solution, then fill and flush with clean water a few times.
If you used soap anywhere in cleaning, re-apply a small amount of food-safe lubricant the bottom of the cylinder. Our recommended and tested lubrican as well as the process is included on the Maintenance and Repairs page.
What never to do
Never heat the cylinder during descaling - steam with any chemicals in it can damage the powder coating through a chemical reaction.
Only brush using soapy water
Keep vinegar or descaling agents off the powder coating. A descaling agent can be fine for the stainless steel itself, but it can damage the exterior powder-coated surfaces if it reaches them, which is why we do not recommend it. If instructed by our support team, you can use a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water (with no heating). Do so at your own risk as the vinegar can damage the powder coated surface.
