Employee Permissions & Software Security (Overview)

This article contains an overview of Employee Permissions and Software Security.

Microvellum Toolbox and the Operational Modules (Production) contain large amounts of company data that may be used either within Microvellum or exported to other types of software such as accounting packages or material management systems. Some of this data is private, and access should be restricted to only specific company personnel. This is a typical use for Employee Permissions.

Another and equally important use for them is to protect your company manufacturing data from unauthorized modification or deletion. To accomplish this, you establish specific employees as qualified to perform certain types of tasks within the software and assign them permissions that give them access to those tasks.

You will fully benefit from setting these permissions only if you are using a database type of SQL Express or SQL Server.

The permission settings are stored in the "MicrovellumSecure" database, which is password protected and encrypted. If this database is corrupted for any reason, you may delete it, and the Microvellum program will re-create it upon startup. Just be aware that when the database is deleted, so will the employee data it contains. The new database created by Microvellum contains the same default sample employee data as when the program is installed for the first time. The Administrator will then need to delete existing contacts and add the company employees. We recommend that you back up this database to prevent the possibility of data loss.

It is possible to use Employee Permissions to create and administer a rudimentary form of "User Groups." Currently, the software supports the creation of these groups only by setting individual employee permissions identically for everyone in the group. You may set up the permissions for one employee and then copy that to any other employees in a group, as explained later in this article.

To configure your employee Permissions, you will need to do the following.

  1. Set up your Employees.

  2. Set up the permissions for each employee.
