What you need to know
It is impossible to determine success without clearly defined metrics. This article explains how to create and manage the Most Important Number(MIN) and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) scoreboard. Specifically, it covers:
Navigating to the MIN and KPI scoreboard
Creating a KPI
Adding the plan and actual data sets to a KPI
Updating KPIs (Including the MIN)
Adding additional data series to a KPI
Key terminology
Most Important Number (MIN): The Most Important Number is the one Key Performance Indicator, above all others, that measures the success of the organization (or the team)
Key Performance Indicator (KPI): A Key Performance Indicators is a quantifiable measure of performance over time for a specific objective
Data series: A category of data. Every KPI has a Plan and Actual data series. Additional series can be added as required.
Data set: Specific data points within a data series
KPI Status: A KPI is either On Track (green), At Risk (orange), or Falling Behind (red) based on the actual data relative to the plan. If there is no plan and actual data the KPI shows a No Status (grey).
Making it happen
Near the top of every plan is a condensed view of the Most Important Number.
Selecting the MIN chart opens an expanded view.
Hover over data points to see the plan and actual values for a specific date.
Select the chart again to enter data.
The KPI tab on the plans page takes you to the KPI scoreboard, where you can access all the KPIs for that plan including the MIN.
The KPI scoreboard is also where to go to create KPIs as outlined in this video.
Once a KPI is created, follow this video to enter the Plan and initial Actual data points.
Keeping the Most Important Number and KPIs up to date is essential. This video explains how to enter data and keep KPIs up to date.
This video explains how to add additional data series beyond the Plan and Actual.
Pro-tip
Typically the Most Important Number is a single KPI, but if there are two metrics that require equal billing, this pro-tip video explains how to add a secondary KPI to the Most Important Number.
