How to add Merge tags to your campaigns
Start creating a Campaign by going to Marketing > Campaigns and select your contacts.
Choose your Route & Priority
In this case, we are only going to be sending an Email Campaign.
Drag the Email element into the builder and click on "Continue"
Insert the Merge field into the Element
There are many use cases where you could use a merge field in your communication.
We will add First Name into the subject line which would automatically update it to the contact it's being sent to.
Clicking on the "Insert Field" link for the Subject Line should open up a popup like this.
Please populate the fields according to your needs, in this case, we are going to be using Hi First Name,
If First Name does not exist for a contact we could either replace it with "there" which would then become "Hi there" or we could click on Empty to just leave it blank.
Once you are done, click on save and your Merge field would be added to the subject line.
Preview your Contacts
A good practice before sending your email/text campaigns is to Preview how the campaign will appear for the Contacts in your list.
To Preview, click on the "Preview Contact" dropdown at the top of the builder and test with a few contacts to make sure everything looks good.
Once tested, Review your campaign and click on Continue and your Contacts will get personalized messages.
Personalization when a Contact's first name is available
Clicking on the "Preview Contact" dropdown will bring up all the contacts that you have previously selected.
In this case, we selected a Contact that has a First Name so the preview would automatically populate this information into the subject line.
Personalization when a Contact's first name is not available
When we select a Contact that only has a phone number and no first name, the Preview would use the fall-back text that we created earlier which is "Hey there"
Add a Merge Field to a Paragraph Element.
Click and drag the Paragraph element to the Builder screen and you should be able to see the detail view of that element.
Click on the "Insert Field" link and you will be presented with all the fields that can be used for a particular element.
In this case, we will be using the "Last name" field to automatically add that to the content of the email to our contacts.
Merge Field format and tips
If you'd like to know more details on how Merge Field formatting works you can click on the "Show Merge Field Formatting Tips" link which should show the proper format and how it works.
Note: Merge fields are available in Campaigns/Templates in these areas:
Email: Subject Line, Preheader, Text Element, Paragraph Element
Text: Text Body
Merge Fields in Mobile Pages
You can also include Merge Fields in Mobile Pages.
For this example we have seleted the Title Element and inserted a Merge Field for the First Name.
Similar to Campaigns if the Contact's First Name is available then it would automatically populate the field otherwise it would use a fallback of "Hi there,"
We can also use Merge Fields in a Paragraph element with the same text and fall back.
Note: On a Mobile Page the merge fields are only available in the Title element and Paragraph element.
