Hall Pass Queue: Managing Hallway Waitlists Automatically

Everything you need to know about how the Hall Pass Queue holds requests, shows queue position, and helps teachers manage waiting students.

Getting a hall pass shouldn't mean asking three times and hoping for the best. The Hall Pass Queue holds a student's request in line automatically when they can't get a pass right away, so nobody has to track who's next. Students see exactly where they stand. Teachers get a visible waitlist instead of a mental one. By the end of this article, you'll know how to turn the feature on, how it behaves in both student-led and teacher-led workflows, and what students and teachers each see along the way.

Permission level Required: Owner | Manager | Teacher | Student

⚠️ This feature is currently in closed Beta and has not yet been released to all Plus and Premium subscribers.

Prerequisite: Bell Schedule must be enabled for your school and period data must be shared in order for the Hall Pass Queue to function. This feature is available on Plus and Premium subscriptions only.

How the Hall Pass Queue works

The Hall Pass Queue behaves differently depending on whether your school uses a student-led or teacher-led hall pass workflow. Both workflows share the same goal: nobody has to guess who's next.

In a student-led workflow, a student's pass request is held in the queue automatically when it can't be granted right away, for example, when a pass type has reached its active pass limit. The student sees their position in the queue on their own device. The student's teacher sees the same request in the Queued section of My Class. When the hold clears, the next student in line receives their pass automatically.

In a teacher-led workflow, the queue works as a classroom management tool. Instead of assigning a pass immediately, a teacher can place a student in the queue from My Class and work through the list at their own pace.

Outcome: You understand why a student might be queued instead of denied, and how that differs between student-led and teacher-led schools.

Enable the Hall Pass Queue

An Owner turns on the Hall Pass Queue once for the whole school in the Hall Pass settings.

Step-by-step guide to enabling the Hall Pass Queue

  1. Select Hall Pass from the main menu.

  2. Click on the Settings tab.

  3. Under the Hall Pass Settings heading, locate Enable hall pass queue.

  4. Set the toggle to ON.

Outcome: The Hall Pass Queue is now active for your school. Students and teachers will see queue behavior the next time a pass request can't be granted immediately.

💎 Tip: Turn on the Hall Pass Queue after your pass limits, blackout periods, and No Party Groups are already configured. The queue activates based on those existing rules, so it works best once they're in place.

Manage the queue in My Class

Teachers manage the Hall Pass Queue from My Class. This section applies to Teachers.

Two groups appear above your class roster in My Class: Active Hall Pass, showing students currently out on a pass, and Queued, showing students waiting for one. Each queued entry shows the student's name, their destination, and their position number. The Queued panel also shows an end time, after which the queue for that period closes.

Interactive walkthrough: Viewing the Queued panel in My Class and adding a student to the queue.

Step-by-step guide to managing the queue in My Class

  1. Navigate to My Class.

  2. Select the appropriate User List.

  3. Select the student's checkbox in your class roster.

    • A student who is currently queued shows a numbered badge on their roster card. That number is their position in the queue.

  4. In the Search action panel, select Hall Pass in the Category drop-down.

  5. Select the specific pass type.

  6. Add an optional note in the Note to student (optional) field.

  7. Choose how to send the request:
    a. Click Assign, which issues the pass immediately if capacity allows.
    b. Click Add to queue, which places the student in the queue directly, without attempting to assign the pass first.

  8. Once the other hall passes have ended, the student in the queue is sent a notification to start their pass. If they do not start the pass in 60 seconds, they will move to the bottom of the queue.

Outcome: The student appears in the Queued panel with a position number. Their roster card in My Class also shows that number, so you can see their place in line without opening the panel.

💎 Tip: In an emergency, you can override the queue for a student and issue their pass immediately, regardless of their position in line. Select the student and click Assign as you normally would. This bypasses the queue for that single request.

What students see in the queue

Students see their own queue position from their device. This section applies to Students.

When a student's request can't be granted right away, Minga places it in the queue instead of denying it. When the hall pass is ready to be assigned, the student will receive a pop-up notification in Minga prompting them to start their pass. If the pass is not started within 60 seconds, the hall pass request goes to the bottom of the queue.

Step-by-step guide to the student hall pass queue workflow

  1. Begin by selecting Create Hall Pass from the main menu.

  2. Select the desired hall pass type.

  3. If your school has the setting Must assign a teacher to hall passes or Teacher must approve pass enabled, select or type the name of the appropriate teacher in the Approved by list.

  4. Click Create.

  5. The student has now been entered into the Hall Pass queue and will see a notification reading You're in line. You'll be notified when it's your turn.

  6. The student sees their position in the hall pass queue in a banner at the top of their screen. They also have an option to cancel their request by clicking the Leave button.

  7. When their pass is ready to be assigned, they will receive a pop up notification to start their pass.

  8. The student has 60 seconds to start the pass. If it is not started before the time elapses, they will move to the bottom of the queue.

Outcome: Students always know where they stand, without needing to ask their teacher or resubmit their request.

Troubleshooting

A student's pass request is stuck in the queue and never clears.

If a student's position in the queue does not move, confirm that an active pass ahead of them in line has actually ended. The queue only advances when the pass or condition holding it, a capacity limit, a No Party Group, or a blackout period clears. If the condition has cleared and the student still has not received their pass, a Teacher can override the queue and assign the pass directly from My Class.

The Add to queue option doesn't appear in My Class.

If Add to queue is missing from the Search action panel, confirm with your Admin that the Hall Pass Queue toggle is turned on in Hall Pass Settings. If the toggle is on and the option is still missing, confirm your school is using a Teacher-led or Student-led hall pass workflow. The Hall Pass Queue does not appear in Kiosk mode.

Queue position badges aren't showing on student cards in My Class.

If a student is queued but no badge appears on their roster card, refresh My Class. Position badges update in real time as the queue moves, so a delay usually resolves on refresh.

I have set up a bell schedule but am getting a message that there is "No active class period' and the queue is not available.

Period data must be shared with Minga in order for the hall pass queue to operate correctly. Double-check your SIS sharing settings to ensure that period data is being shared.

FAQs

What causes a student to be added to the Hall Pass Queue instead of getting a pass right away?

A student is added to the Hall Pass Queue when their pass request can't be granted immediately in a student-led workflow. For example, because the pass type is at capacity. Rather than denying the request, Minga holds it in the queue and issues the pass automatically once the hold clears.

Can a teacher move a student to the front of the Hall Pass Queue?

A teacher can override the Hall Pass Queue for an individual student by selecting them in My Class and clicking Assign. This issues a student's pass immediately, ahead of their queue position, without affecting anyone else in line.

Does the Hall Pass Queue work with Kiosk mode?

The Hall Pass Queue does not currently work with Kiosk mode. It is available only in Teacher-led and Student-led hall pass workflows.

Do I need a Bell Schedule set up to use the Hall Pass Queue?

Yes. The Hall Pass Queue requires Bell Schedule to be configured before it will function. Set up Bell Schedule before turning on the Hall Pass Queue toggle in Hall Pass Settings.

Will the Hall Pass Queue change my denied hall pass data?

Yes. Requests that were previously logged as denied because of a temporary hold, like a capacity limit or a No Party Group, are now held in the queue instead. Your denied-pass data will reflect genuine denials rather than repeated requests during a hold.

What plans include the Hall Pass Queue?

The Hall Pass Queue is available on Plus and Premium plans.
