The gray screen is normal for iPhone X and older devices.  If you test MixCam by taking a photo, MixCam will capture a photo with one camera, then immediately capture another photo with the second camera creating a single image with two photos.  You can control which photo is taken first (front or rear camera) by selecting the arrow button on the bottom right corner.

If you were looking to use both the front and back simultaneously, that feature is only supported on newer devices like the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, 11 and 11 pro running iOS 13 and later.
