Understanding overlays and underlays

Overlays, underlays, and scenes are the framework for creatives. All ads built in the Ad Builder are composed of elements (like images or video), and scenes that contain those elements. Most ads (ads with multiple scenes) also use an overlay, which contains elements that are applied to every ad scene (whereas elements housed by a scene only appear in that scene).

In this article, we'll cover the following:

Overlays

The overlay is a set of elements that will appear throughout your ad's scenes. Most predesigned templates already feature an overlay containing the logo element, which is used to house your company's logo image.

Adding Elements to an Overlay

If there are already elements in the overlay, you can access them by clicking on the Overlay label in the attribute panel. This will expand the scene and expose the elements contained in it.

You may add elements by hovering over the Plus Sign icon to see the expanded menu and clicking on the desired element. Hovering over an element will display the element name.

πŸ’‘ Note: The overlay is a fixed scene and cannot be deleted from the attribute panel like other scenes; to delete an element contained by the overlay, select the element and hit the delete or backspace button on your keyboard.

Underlays

The underlay is a set of elements in the background of your ad that will appear throughout all of your ad's scenes. Underlays are great for setting a consistent background color or image to be shown while your scenes and elements transition on top.
