In the volume calculation tool, there are two calculation methods to use. The difference and when to use each are explained below.
Grid
Volume calculation using a grid. The method is scalable and a fast calculation method, even for large areas. Not suitable for calculations over smaller areas.
Prism
Volume calculation using a prism. Prism can only be used to calculate triangulated 3D models against each other since the method uses triangulation. It provides better accuracy than the previous method when calculating against theoretical models. The method is available for use with CAD files and Design models. Not suitable for calculations over larger areas. With Prism, you can also get a detailed report on the prism volume with a list of all prisms.
Follow these steps to calculate excavation and fill volumes between triangulated 3D models:
Activate the Volume Calculation tool.
Give the calculation a name and choose your triangulated 3D model, e.g., dwg, dxf, or xml at SURFACE AFTER. Usually, finished ground (FM) or the desired result after earthwork or mass movement has been performed.
In the SURFACE BEFORE field, choose the other triangulated 3D model, e.g., dwg, dxf, or xml. Usually, an existing or theoretical ground model (DTM) showing how the ground looks before earthwork or mass movement.
Under Boundary you can select to activate calculate part of the model to define the area you want to calculate.
With the function enabled, you have three options to define the area to be included in the calculation.
Polygon
Freehand draw a boundary polygon with the left mouse button and finish the boundary with a right-click. Click on an edge line (the line segment is highlighted in blue) to lock from which edge the new point should be connected. Click again to release the lock from the edge. To, for example, fill in parts of a boundary, lock the edge by clicking on it and then directly on an already placed point it should be connected to. You can also delete points via right-click.
CAD
Choose an uploaded dwg or dxf file to delimit the volume calculation against the model.
Click Start Calculation to start the calculation. A message will be displayed in SkyView when the calculation is complete. It is possible to continue working while the calculation is carried out.
Once you have started the calculation, an ongoing calculation is displayed under the VOLUME CALCULATION section in the object list.
When the calculation is complete, the values for excavation and fill are displayed in the object list. The calculation gets the name you specified; otherwise, the default is the current date and time. All calculations are listed through the dropdown menu. The colors for excavation and fill also correspond to the visualization of the volume in the scene. To see the volume in the scene, click on the eye. Here, you can also see the Surface Before against which the calculation is made.
If you want to bring the volume down to the ground, use the Lift up volume switch. You also have the option to hide/show the different parts of the volume through the eye.
To delete a volume calculation from the object, select the calculation in the list and click on the trash bin.
