Postback in affiliate marketing
Postback in affiliate marketing is a mechanism for transmitting conversion data (usually sales or actions you want to track) from an affiliate partner platform or advertising network aggregator back to affiliates (publishers) for accurate tracking and payment of their commission for the conversions generated.
Here's how it works:
Creation of a Tracked Link: Affiliates are provided with unique affiliate links that they use to promote the advertiser's products or services. These links contain unique identifiers such as click ID or other tags.
Click and transition: The user clicks on the affiliate link and goes to the advertiser’s website. At the moment of this click, data such as the click ID is captured and stored.
Conversion: If a user takes a desired action, such as making a purchase or filling out a form, that information is also recorded. For example, the advertiser can send a postback request to the affiliate's server to report a conversion.
Postback: Postback is an HTTP request sent by the advertiser server to the affiliate server. This request contains conversion data such as click ID and conversion cost. The affiliate accepts this request and records the data in their system.
Commission Calculation: Based on the data received from the postback, the affiliate platform determines the commission that the affiliate should receive for the generated conversions.
Commission Payment: The affiliate is paid a commission in accordance with the terms of the affiliate program.
Postback is important to ensure accurate conversion tracking and fair payment to affiliates for their affiliate marketing efforts. This mechanism also allows advertisers and affiliates to monitor the performance and effectiveness of their campaigns and make more informed decisions to optimize their marketing efforts.
