Changing a member’s role

Promote or demote someone in Modge: change a member's role between Owner, Manager, Member, and Viewer. What permissions update instantly and what stays the same.

You can change a member’s role between Owner, Member, and Viewer at any time. Manager is set differently (by assigning them to a team or project manager list), not via a role dropdown.

Who can do this

Owner only.

Changing the role

  1. Open Members in the sidebar

  2. Click the member you want to change

  3. On the General tab, find the Role dropdown

  4. Pick the new role

  5. Save

What changes immediately

The new role takes effect the next time the member loads any page or refreshes their desktop app. They do not need to sign out and back in.

Seat impact

  • Switching between Owner, Manager-style Member, and regular Member: no seat change (these all consume seats)

  • Switching from any seat-consuming role to Viewer: a seat is freed

  • Switching from Viewer to a seat-consuming role: a seat is consumed (fails if you have no available seats)

If a role change would push you above your seat limit, the action fails with a message asking you to add seats first.

Why Manager has no dropdown

In Modge, Manager is not a distinct role at the account level. You become a Manager by being on a team or project manager list. See How the “Manager” role works.

To “promote” a Member to Manager, add them to a team’s manager list. To “demote” a Manager to a regular Member, remove them from every team and project manager list.

What happens to their data

Changing a role does not delete any data. Their timesheets, screenshots, and activity events stay with them.

If you switch them to Viewer, they keep their old data but can no longer track new time.

What about transferring ownership

There is currently no built-in “transfer ownership” action. To effectively change owners:

  1. Make sure the new owner has a Modge account in your organization

  2. Set them to the Owner role using the steps above

  3. Once they have Owner, the old owner can stay (you can have multiple owners) or be set to Member or Viewer
