The Modge desktop app runs on macOS and Windows. Most modern machines meet the requirements without any special setup.
Supported operating systems
macOS
macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later
Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) and Intel x86_64 both supported
Universal binary, so the same DMG works on either chip
Windows
Windows 10 (version 1903 or later)
Windows 11
64-bit Intel/AMD only. 32-bit and ARM are not currently supported
Linux
Linux is not supported as a first-class desktop target at this time. There is no Modge installer for Linux.
Hardware
Minimum for the desktop app:
2 GB RAM
200 MB free disk space (plus space for cached uploads)
A keyboard, mouse, or trackpad (Modge tracks input activity)
The desktop app is lightweight. Memory usage typically stays under 200 MB during normal tracking.
Network
Modge needs internet access to:
Upload tracking events and screenshots
Receive on-demand commands (like an admin-triggered screenshot)
Check for app updates
If the user is offline, the desktop app queues events locally and uploads them when connectivity returns. See Reading the connectivity indicator.
Domains Modge connects to
If you have a strict firewall or proxy, allow outbound HTTPS to:
*.supabase.co (data and authentication)
*.modge.com (web app and updates)
*.amazonaws.com (storage for screenshots and update bundles)
Permissions
On macOS, the desktop app requires three system permissions:
Accessibility
Input Monitoring
Screen Recording
On Windows, the desktop app does not currently require special permissions to start. Some antivirus products may flag the unsigned activity monitor; if so, see Windows setup and what to expect.
What if my computer does not meet requirements
If you are on an older macOS, the installer will refuse to run. Upgrade your OS.
If you are on an older Windows, the installer will run but some features (screenshot capture, focus detection) may behave erratically. Upgrade your OS for the best experience.
