Whether you're traveling, working remotely, or experiencing a temporary network interruption, Monotype Connect+ App is designed to ensure that your work can continue without disruption.
Fonts already available on your machine remain accessible, previously activated fonts continue to work, and documents can still be opened and edited.
Offline mode does not change ownership, permissions, licensing decisions, or user intent. It simply reflects a temporary inability to communicate with online services.
Core principle: If a font is available on your machine, it continues to work even when you are offline.
Why offline mode exists
Loss of connectivity should not mean loss of productivity.
When users open documents, apply fonts, or continue ongoing creative work, they expect the application to behave predictably. Unexpected font deactivations, broken documents, or unclear failures can quickly erode trust.
Offline mode exists to provide clear and reliable behavior by answering three questions:
What continues to work?
What will complete when connectivity returns?
What requires an active internet connection?
The goal is to maintain confidence and continuity, even when the network is unavailable.
What is an offline mode
Offline mode is a network-driven state, not a setting that users manually enable.
The application enters offline mode when it can no longer reliably communicate with Connect+ services.
While offline:
Local device data becomes the primary source of truth.
Fonts already available on the machine continue working.
Certain cloud-backed actions may be deferred until connectivity returns.
Features that require live online services become unavailable.
What offline mode does not mean
Offline mode does not mean:
Fonts stop working.
Previously activated fonts are removed.
Ownership or account permissions change.
Existing work becomes unsafe.
Users must manually manage recovery.
Offline mode reduces available services, not user confidence.
How Connect+ behaves offline
To make offline behavior predictable, actions fall into three categories.
Keeps Working
These actions rely on resources already available on your device.
Examples:
Using activated fonts
Using local fonts
Using system fonts
Activating locally available font binaries
Viewing fonts and metadata
Opening documents that reference local fonts
Auto-activating fonts that exist locally
User experience: Work continues normally.
Works later
These actions represent user intent but require connectivity to synchronize completely.
Examples:
Marking fonts as favorites
Adding fonts to a library
Starting imported-font workflows
When performed offline, the application records the action and automatically completes synchronization after connectivity is restored.
User experience: Your action is acknowledged immediately and completed later.
Needs Internet
Some features cannot function meaningfully without online services.
Examples:
Searching cloud-only fonts
Retrieving fonts not available locally
Team collaboration features
Sharing workflows
Authentication on a new device
User experience: The application clearly indicates that an internet connection is required.
Offline Capability Matrix
Capability | Offline Behavior | Category |
Using activated fonts | Continues to work | Keeps Working |
Activating local font binaries | Allowed | Keeps Working |
Using local and system fonts | Unaffected | Keeps Working |
Viewing fonts and metadata | Allowed | Keeps Working |
Local auto-activation | Works | Keeps Working |
Marking favorites | Synced later | Works Later |
Adding fonts to library | Synced later | Works Later |
Imported font uploads | Uploaded later | Works Later |
Searching cloud-only fonts | Unavailable | Needs Internet |
Retrieving missing cloud fonts | Unavailable | Needs Internet |
Team and sharing features | Unavailable | Needs Internet |
Feature behavior may evolve over time, but these categories remain the guiding model for offline functionality.
User Awareness and Status Indicators
Connect+ communicates offline status clearly and calmly.
When offline:
An offline indicator is displayed in the application and supported plugins.
Messaging reassures users that locally available fonts remain usable.
Actions requiring connectivity are clearly identified.
Deferred actions are acknowledged and synchronized automatically when possible.
Users are informed without unnecessary interruptions.
Plugins and Offline Mode
Plugins follow the same offline behavior model as the Connect+ application.
While offline:
Fonts already available to the plugin continue to work.
Local font activation can still succeed when font binaries exist locally.
Server-backed font retrieval and cloud resolution are unavailable.
Offline indicators and messaging remain consistent across both the application and plugins to provide a predictable experience.
Common Offline Scenarios
Temporary Loss of Internet
If connectivity is lost during an active session:
Connect+ enters offline mode automatically.
An offline indicator is displayed.
Existing work continues uninterrupted.
Opening Documents with Missing Fonts
If the fonts are available locally:
Fonts are activated automatically.
The document opens normally.
If the fonts exist only in the cloud:
Retrieval is unavailable until connectivity returns.
The application clearly explains the limitation.
Working with Favorites, Libraries, or Imports
Actions such as:
Favoriting a font
Adding a font to a library
Starting an imported font workflow
are recorded locally and synchronized automatically after reconnection.
Closing the App While Offline
Offline actions are preserved.
When the application is reopened or connectivity returns:
Queued actions remain intact.
Synchronization resumes automatically.
No user intervention is required.
Authentication and Sessions
Existing Logged-In Users
If you are already signed in and lose connectivity:
Your session remains active.
Fonts continue working normally.
You are not forced to sign out.
Launching Connect+ Offline
With a previous valid session
The application opens normally.
Existing work remains available.
Without a previous valid session
Sign-in requires connectivity.
Login is unavailable until an internet connection is restored.
Logging Out While Offline
If you choose to log out:
The local session is cleared.
You enter the normal logged-out state.
Because fonts require an authenticated session, fonts are disabled after logout. This is standard application behavior and not a limitation of offline mode.
Token Expiration While Offline
If authentication tokens expire while offline:
The session remains usable locally.
Users are not forcibly signed out.
Normal authentication checks resume once connectivity returns.
Extended Offline Usage
For licensing and entitlement protection, Connect+ enforces a maximum offline usage period.
30-Day Offline Limit
If a device remains offline for 30 consecutive days:
Fonts are deactivated immediately.
The application transitions to a logged-out state.
Reconnection and authentication are required to restore functionality.
No prior warning is provided.
This behavior is intentional and helps prevent deliberate attempts to bypass licensing requirements through indefinite offline use.
The 30-day limit is fixed and cannot be configured.
What Connect+ Deliberately Does Not Do
Even while offline, Connect+ does not:
Deactivate fonts simply because connectivity is lost.
Change ownership or account permissions.
Silently fail user actions.
Predict or assume server outcomes.
Require users to manually manage offline state.
The system is designed to be predictable, transparent, and reversible.
Summary
Offline mode ensures that losing connectivity does not mean losing the ability to work.
Fonts already available on your machine continue to function, local workflows remain uninterrupted, and user intent is preserved through automatic synchronization when connectivity returns. Features that genuinely require online services are clearly identified, helping users understand what can continue immediately, what will complete later, and what requires an internet connection.
Offline mode is not about doing everything without the internet. It is about doing the right things reliably until connectivity returns.
