Understanding the Price vs. Fair Value Chart
The Price vs. Fair Value chart offers a comprehensive historical view of a stock's valuation, allowing investors to compare its market price against Morningstar's assessed Fair Value over time. This chart is an essential tool for understanding how a stock's intrinsic value has evolved and how its market price has moved in relation to that valuation.
To review the historical Fair Value for a stock and its price movement, navigate to the Stock details page on the Morningstar Investor Australia website. On the stock details page, locate and select the "Price vs Fair Value" tab.
This chart visually represents two key data points over a historical period, providing valuable context for investment analysis:
Historical Fair Value: This line illustrates Morningstar's calculated intrinsic value of the stock at various points in time. It reflects our analysts' assessment of the company's true worth based on fundamental analysis.
Stock Price Movement: This line displays the actual market price at which the stock has traded over the same historical period.
Investors uses the Price vs. Fair Value chart to gain a deeper understanding of a stock's valuation trends and its market behavior. It helps in:
Tracking Fair Value Changes: Observe how Morningstar's Fair Value assessment for a stock has evolved over time. This can indicate shifts in the company's fundamentals, industry outlook, or broader economic conditions.
Analyzing Price-to-Value Relationship: Understand the historical relationship between the stock's market price and its estimated Fair Value. This comparison can highlight periods when the stock was trading significantly above (overvalued) or below (undervalued) its intrinsic worth.
Informing Investment Decisions: By reviewing past trends, investors can gain context for current valuations and identify potential opportunities or risks based on how the market price has historically reacted to Morningstar's Fair Value estimates.
Quantitative Fair Value for Stocks
For stocks not covered by a Morningstar analyst, a Quantitative Fair Value is provided. This value is calculated weekly using a systematic, data-driven approach. You will see a 'Q' next to the star rating to indicate that the fair value is quantitatively derived.
Important Note: Medalist ratings (Gold, Silver, Bronze) are exclusively for funds and are not applied to individual stocks. Medalist Rating also use Quantitative methods.

Why is a particular Stock or fund not covered by Morningstar Analysts.
Morningstar analysts do not provide coverage for every stock or fund available in the market. The decision to cover a particular investment is based on a strategic assessment to ensure that our research is most relevant and valuable to investors and their advisors.
Our coverage decisions are primarily driven by several factors:
Investment Merit: We prioritize investments that demonstrate significant investment merit.
Asset Size: Generally, larger funds and companies with substantial asset sizes are more likely to be covered.
Market Demand: We consider the level of investor interest and market demand for particular stocks or funds.
Analyst Availability: The capacity and specialization of our analyst team also play a role in determining coverage.
Focus on the S&P/ASX200 Index
Our primary focus for stock coverage in Australia is on companies within the S&P/ASX200 index. These companies represent the largest and most influential entities in the Australian market, making them highly relevant to a broad range of investors.
Coverage of Small to Mid-Cap Stocks
While we aim to provide comprehensive research, it is not feasible to cover every stock, especially within the small to mid-cap segments. Our focus remains on identifying and analyzing those companies that we believe offer the greatest investment potential for our users.
Initial Public Offerings (IPOs)
Morningstar analysts typically do not provide coverage for Initial Public Offerings (IPOs). Our coverage usually begins after a company has been publicly traded for a period, allowing for sufficient financial data and market performance to be established.
When is Financial Reporting Season in Australia?
Australian-listed companies generally have a financial year ending in either:
June, or
December
According to ASX regulations, companies are allowed a two-month grace period after their financial year end to disclose or update their financial information.
As a result, the reporting periods are as follows:
Companies with a June year-end typically report results by August
Companies with a December year-end typically report results by February
These two periods are commonly referred to as Earnings Seasons in the Australian market.
Morningstar aligns with this schedule and publishes its Earnings Season Insights reports twice each year:
Once in February (following the December year-end reporting)
Once in August (following the June year-end reporting)
These reports provide analysis and commentary on key trends, company performance, and market implications based on financial results announced during these periods.
Do Morningstar Analyst Reports Include Short Selling Information?
Morningstar analyst reports do not include specific short selling data for the stocks reviewed. While we acknowledge that short selling information can offer valuable insights into market sentiment, our reports primarily focus on a different set of analytical criteria.
Our analyst reports are designed to provide a comprehensive evaluation based on:
Fundamental Analysis: In-depth examination of a company's financial health.
Financial Performance: Assessment of past and projected financial results.
Key Metrics: Other crucial data points that influence stock valuations.
Although our reports do not specifically detail short interest, our overall evaluation of a company is built upon a broad range of factors, including its financial strength, competitive positioning within its industry, and future growth prospects.
Why is the Market cap of Stocks different on Morningstar website compared to other platforms?
The market cap for e.g. AST Space Mobile Inc (ASTS) listed on Morningstar's website may not match the figures shown on other platforms like Bloomberg or MarketWatch. The difference arises because Morningstar only includes Class A shares in the market cap calculation, while other platforms may include Class B and Class C shares as well.
Here’s why:
Morningstar Market Cap: Our website only includes the Class A shares, which represent the economic interest in the company. These shares participate in the company’s earnings.
Other Platforms (e.g., Bloomberg, MarketWatch): These platforms calculate the market cap by including Class B and Class C shares, which are considered non-economic interest and do not participate in the company’s earnings.
Understanding Dividend Yields on Morningstar Investor Australia
You may notice two different forward dividend yields on the Morningstar Investor Australia website: one on the Analysis tab and another on the Forecast tab. These yields can vary because they are calculated using distinct methods and data sources. This difference is expected and provides a comprehensive view of a company's dividend performance and potential.
Analysis Tab: Historical Dividend Yield
The Analysis tab displays a dividend yield based on a company's past performance. This calculation uses historical dividend payments to reflect what has already occurred, offering insight into a company's track record.
Calculation Method: The yield is determined using the following formula:
(Dividend per share × Payout frequency) ÷ Price
Forecast Tab: Forward-Looking Dividend Yield
In contrast, the Forecast tab provides a dividend yield that is forward-looking. It is based on analyst projections for future dividends per share, offering insights into anticipated performance and potential future returns.
What it shows: Expected future dividends based on analyst projections. This yield incorporates expectations about a company's future earnings and payout policies, often referencing specific analyst reports.
Calculation Components:
Forecast Dividend Per Share (DPS) Formula: payout ratio × Net Profit After Tax (NPAT)
Yield Formula: DPS ÷ Price
Why Do These Yields Differ?
The primary reason for the variation in forward dividend yields between the Analysis tab and Forecast tab is their fundamental data sources and time horizons.
The Analysis page uses historical dividend data, reflecting actual past payments.
The Forecast page utilizes forward-looking analyst estimates, which are based on projected future earnings and anticipated payout ratios.
