Heatmap Link Analytics

Updated over a month ago

Click Link Analytics gives you detailed insights into how visitors interact with individual elements—such as links, buttons, and form fields—directly within your Click and Interactive Heatmaps.

They help you uncover which elements draw the most engagement, how long it takes visitors to find them, and where friction occurs—so you can make informed design and usability improvements.

Where Link Analytics appear

  • Link Analytics appear as small white tooltip boxes next to interactive elements in your Click or Interactive Heatmaps.

  • By default:

    • Static Click Heatmaps display desktop data.

    • Interactive Heatmaps display all devices unless filtered.

  • You can apply filters (device, date range, audience) and they’ll apply to the metrics in the tooltips as well.

💡Troubleshooting Tip: Sometimes elements are styled to look clickable but aren’t detected by Mouseflow. If this happens, see our guide on how to make them trackable.

Types of Metrics

Click Metrics (Desktop)

  • Clicks – Total clicks on the element (hard count + % of all clicks on the page).
    % = (element clicks ÷ total page clicks) × 100

  • Clicking Visitors – Unique visitors who clicked at least once (not total clicks).
    % = (clicking visitors ÷ total page views) × 100

  • Click-Rages – Times the element was involved in rapid, repeated clicks. With the possibility to mute.

  • Click-Errors – Times a click on the element caused a JavaScript error.

  • Time Before Click – Average time it took visitors to click the element after page load.

Hover Metrics

  • Hovers – Total number of visitors who hovered over the element, with a percentage of all hovers on the page.

  • Hover → Click Rate – Percentage of hovers that resulted in a click.
Example: 7.6% means that out of all hovers, 7.6% ended in a click.

  • Hover → Click Time – Average time between a visitor hovering over the element and then clicking it.

  • Hover Time – Average total time spent hovering over the element, regardless of clicking.

  • Hover Order – The sequence in which visitors hovered over the element relative to others (e.g., 7.8 means it was typically the 8th hovered element on the page).

  • Time Before Hover – Average time before first hover after page load.

Tap Metrics (Mobile & Tablet)

  • Taps – Total taps on the element (% of all taps on the page).

  • Tapping Visitors – Unique visitors who tapped at least once.

  • Time Before Tap – Average time before tapping after page load.

When analyzing link analytics, keep your page goals in mind. Ask yourself:

  • Is my primary Call-to-Action being found and clicked quickly?

  • Are visitors spending too much time hovering without clicking?

  • Are some elements distracting from my main conversion points?

  • Could rearranging elements improve visibility and engagement?

  • Are form fields receiving balanced attention, or is there drop-off?

💡Pro Tips:

  • Refresh the page view after switching device filters (CTRL+R on Windows / ⌘+R on Mac).

  • Save filtered views for quick device comparisons.

  • Compare similar elements (e.g., two buttons) to see which performs better.
