Canon digital cameras are broken down into three categories with subcategories within them. Firstly there are Canon DSLR’s and within this there are full-frame bodies and bodies that feature a cropped APS-C sensor. Secondly there are Canon Mirrorless cameras which feature the new full-frame EOS R range and the EOS M APS-C range. You could also argue that the Canon Powershot's fit into this category. Finally there are the Canon video cameras which are made up of a mix of handy-cam style camcorders and professional level EF and PL mount bodies.
Canon DSLR’s - Full Frame & APS-C
DSLR cameras are ideal for photographers that require the best possible image quality and performance whilst also allowing full creative control by the way of interchangeable lenses and accessories.
Let’s start with top tier Canon, their professional range.
The 1D series started with the release of the Canon EOS 1D in 2001 and featured a 4.1MP CCD sensor. This model of 1D has been superseded by several replacements throughout the last 19 years. The recently released 1D X Mark III is the new flagship of Canon professional DSLR’s.
Moving down the line we arrive at the 5D line of cameras, with the original EOS 5D being the first full-frame DSLR with a “standard” body size (as opposed to the taller integrated battery grip models, such as the 1D). The Canon 5D MkIII is possibly the most popular full-frame DSLR ever produced and is still used by professional photographers around the world.
The last DSLR in the full-frame body range from Canon is the 6D and more recently the 6D MkII, this is essentially a stripped down 5D. Whilst retaining the full-frame sensor, the body features a polycarbonate top cover making the overall lighter and there aren’t as many buttons or features found on the 6D. This makes the Canon EOS 6D the ideal full frame DSLR for someone that doesn’t want to feel like they’re carrying around a bulky professional set-up.
Top Tip: The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens is an ideal lens to partner with a 6D. It compliments the lightweight aesthetics of the 6D and is pin sharp.
