We place grab bars for entering or exiting a shower or tub vertically the majority of the time. 

The advantage of this is it covers a range of height and is equally useful for entering or exiting.

A horizontally placed grab bar may have some advantages. Still, we find it not quite useful for exiting the shower since one's grip on the bath rail is not as functionally advantageous when stepping out of the bathing area.
