How is applying for SNAP through mRelief different than applying directly at my state portal or local office?

Updated over 9 months ago

Good question! At mRelief, we believe food is a human right and work hard to try to make the process to get SNAP benefits as simple, accessible, and dignified as possible. We want to help you get the benefits you deserve!

To that end, we've created the simplest eligibility screener and SNAP applications as we could, and made the process of submitting documents as painless as possible.

Here's how it works:

  1. You take an eligibility screener at: apply.mrelief.com/screener

  2. If you screen likely eligible for SNAP benefits, you are directed to apply at your state portal, or, if we have a simplified application available in your state, you will be directed to mRelief's simplified application.

  3. If you apply with mRelief's simplified application, the application asks only the necessary questions, is purposefully super user-friendly, and can be completed within 10-15 minutes on your computer or smartphone.

  4. We submit the SNAP application to your state's SNAP office. They will then review the application and provide next steps directly to you, by mail or phone.

  5. While you're waiting to hear from the SNAP office, we suggest documents that the SNAP office will likely request, such as pay stubs, state ID, etc. You can text photos of your documents directly to us or upload them through our online portal. We send these to the SNAP office for you, easing the burden of needing to find a fax machine, mail paper documents, or go in person to the office.

  6. Depending on your state, your SNAP office will send you a letter in the mail or call you for an interview. At mRelief, we do not receive any of this information at our offices. This information is only accessible to you and goes directly to you.

  7. Within 30 days of applying, you should know if you qualify for SNAP! If you do, you will receive an EBT (electronic benefits transfer) card in the mail with your SNAP benefits on it. A regular amount will be added to your card each month until you are notified for renewal or recertification.
