What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It's the practice of increasing the likelihood that an organization’s spokespeople and core narratives appear as citations or summaries in AI-powered search answers rather than simply optimizing for traditional link-based SEO.
For example:
With SEO, the goal is to appear on Page 1 of Google. If people click your link, you win. That game is about keywords, clicks, and backlinks.
With GEO, the goal is to appear in the answer itself - the AI-generated summary that people now read in response to a question or prompt instead of searching.

Create a Generative Pulse Report
Note: Existing Muck Rack Premier customers will see a pre-populated Generative Pulse report when they first access the tool. This report is intended to help you get started quickly, using AI to identify your organization and top competitors. You can customize the prompts, organizations, and keywords at any time to better reflect your goals.
From your navigation bar, select Reporting > Generative Pulse Reports.
Select the Create New button in the top right-hand corner.
Enter your report name, select your sharing settings, and add a goal.
NOTE: Adding a goal helps Muck Rack understand the context of the report.
Under Organizations, add any brands, competitor brands, and or related keywords you want to track.
NOTE: You can add up to 10 total organizations and up to 10 keywords to a Generative Pulse report.
💡Tip: Keep organizations at the parent brand level, and use prompts or keywords to surface sub-brand insights. For example, if you wanted to track the Nike sub-brand of Jordans, we recommend selecting "Nike" as the Primary org, then including prompts specific to Nike Jordans, such as “What do athletes and customers say about the durability of Jordans?”
Under Keywords, add up to 10 terms - product types, category terms, key messages, or topics - associated with the organizations you added.
💡Tip: Keywords should reflect the strategic messages that a company is aiming to plant in media coverage so you can use Pulse to measure whether and how well those messages are showing up in LLM-generated responses.
Define the prompts you want to monitor. These are the questions AI assistants will answer. For example, ‘What are the top ice cream brands this year?’ For guidance on best practices for writing prompts, see our tips in our Prompting Best Practices article.
Select the Suggest Prompts button to have Muck Rack recommend some prompts based on the information you’ve entered about your organization, competitors, keywords, and goals.
NOTE: You can add up to 100 prompts to a single Generative Pulse report—and we strongly recommend using as many as possible.
Think of prompts as search questions the AI will answer. The more prompts you include, the more accurately the report will reflect how AI platforms describe your brand and competitors across different scenarios.
Select the Generate Report button at the bottom.
NOTE: Generative Pulse Reports refresh once daily. If you make changes to your report, those changes may be reflected in your report the following day.

Which Language Learning Models (LLMs) are included in this report? | ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude |

What’s different about the updated Share of Voice widget? | You can now view how Share of Voice changes over time, with visual indicators like % change badges and a toggle for line chart views. |
Why is my "Share of Voice: Primary and Secondary Organizations" widget showing 0%? | If none of your organizations are mentioned in AI responses to your prompts, this widget will show 0%.

How does Generative Pulse handle hallucinations? | Muck Rack does not alter or filter the responses it gets from LLMs, so hallucinations (made-up sources or incorrect citations) will show up in the report exactly as they would appear if you queried ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini directly.
Because the platform captures the exact returned citations, users can investigate them (by looking at the specific URLs cited) to determine whether the sources are valid or hallucinated.
In other words, Muck Rack is not doing any intermediary “fact-checking,” but it provides full visibility into what the LLMs cite so teams can assess accuracy themselves. |
Does Generative Pulse include any historical data? | Data begins from the day the Generative Pulse report was created and will reflect trends from that point forward. There is no historical backfill.
NOTE: If you remove a prompt from your report, the historical data will remain. |
How are citation trends calculated? | Citation trends (the colored numbers shown to the right of the counts in various widgets of this report) are calculated to show the value change (whole number) rather than a percentage (%) change.
Here's how we calculate the change:
|
Can I see which Subreddits are cited in LLMs using Generative Pulse? | While Generative Pulse may not show the Subreddits in the widgets themselves, you can find which Subreddits are cited using the following steps:
Select the three dots in the top right corner, then select Export All Cited URLs.
This will download the list as a CSV file, which you can then open and use Ctrl + F (or Command + F) to search for "Reddit" and find each unique URL, which should include the name of any Subreddits:
