How do I use the Online Classroom?

If you haven't accessed the Online Classroom yet, you may wish to read our Getting Started article first. If you are having problems, we also have a troubleshooting guide for the Online Classroom.

Once you are in the Online Classroom session, you will see a row of icons near the bottom of the screen.

Check the “Audio Source” in the “Audio Mixer / Audio Settings” icon - use the drop-down menu to choose the appropriate input device. Check you are sending audio into the Online Classroom by speaking towards your microphone and confirming that the Audio Level meter shows a moving green bar.

A list of these icons and what they do

  • Video and Audio Quality - toggle between high quality / HD and low quality / SD for both audio and video.

  • Microphone mute - turn your microphone on (when the icon is grey) and off (when the icon is red).

  • Metronome - you can set the time signature and beats per minute and turn it on and off - only the user who activates the metronome will hear it. Press share to send the metronome audio to your teacher, this will mix the metronome into your audio channel.

    • Note - sharing metronome audio is only supported in Google chrome. Some devices may not be able to process the audio quickly enough and it should be viewed as an "advanced setting".

  • Piano - on-screen piano keyboard which you can play by pressing the keys on the screen or keyboard. Press the piano icon next to the keyboard to mute it. Plus and minus transposes up and down octaves. Both users must have the piano keyboard visible to hear what the other user is playing.

  • Audio Mixer / Audio Settings - Audio Source device choice, input level meter and switches for audio processing options

  • Whiteboard - on-screen whiteboard. Clearing the whiteboard will do so for both users. Contents do not save once you exit the session.

  • Screen Share - share a window, Chrome tab or your entire screen into the session - some devices will support sharing system audio

  • Chat Window - communicate with the other end of the session via text (e.g. while fixing a sound issue). This data is deleted at the end of the lesson, so teachers should send any lesson notes or content through their account inbox or file library instead.
