What should I write in my first message to a teacher?

For students. Some suggestions of information you should give a teacher when you send them your first message.

Updated over a month ago

The teacher is looking for information from you about what you are looking for and also would like to get to know you a little. You have a minimum of 200 characters to write, so here are some things to think about adding:

  • Who are the lessons for?

  • What instrument would you like to learn (if the teacher offers more than one option)

  • What experience, if any, do you have in playing this instrument?

  • What is your motivation for lessons?

  • What is your availability?

  • What are your goals?

  • Would you like to learn for a particular reason, for example, an exam, a performance, or just for fun?

  • Do you own an instrument?

  • Is there anything else you would like to make the teacher aware of, for example, special requirements, etc?

If you haven't reached 200 characters, you will see an error message to let you know. If this happens, just add a little more information in the text box. Underneath the bottom right of your message box, you will see a counter showing the number of characters you have written.
