Clipping your logo to a layer (Masking)

Clipping a logo to a layer — sometimes referred to as masking or using a mask — ensures that a logo or image uploaded by your customer appears only on a specific part of your product.

This is commonly used for products that allow customers to upload their own image, but where it should only appear in a defined area of the product. For example the surface of a phone case or controller, a patch in a custom shape, or any area defined by the shape of a product itself.

When Clip to layer is enabled, the uploaded logo or image will only be visible inside the boundaries of the selected layer. Any part of the image that extends outside that layer will automatically be hidden.

In the example below, Clip to layer is enabled for the green logo. The selected layer contains the case image, so the logo is clipped to the shape of the case.

Choosing which layer defines the clipping area

To clip a logo or uploaded image, you must select a layer that defines the area in which the logo can appear. You can do this in two ways.

Option 1: Use an existing product layer

You can clip the logo to a layer that already exists in your product, like the case example above.

The logo will only appear inside the visible boundaries of that layer.

This works well when the product image already defines the correct shape.

Option 2: Use a mask image

If you want the logo or uploaded image to appear inside a specific shape (for example a rounded or custom area), you can create a mask image.

To create a mask image:

  1. Create an image representing the visible area (with Photoshop, for example).

  2. The area where the design should appear should be white. The rest of the image should be transparent.

  3. Your mask image should use the same canvas size as your other product images.

  4. Upload this image in the Behind the Scene section of your product.

  5. Go to the Layers section and move the layer to the bottom of the list so it sits beneath all other layers.

When this layer is selected for clipping, anything outside the white shape will be hidden.

  3. Next to Clip to layer, click Edit.

  5. Click on Publish.
