What are futures?

Futures represent a category of derivative contractual arrangements designed to facilitate the purchase or sale of designated commodity assets or securities on a predetermined future date, and at a pre-established price point. These contractual instruments, commonly referred to as "futures contracts," are actively exchanged on specialized futures markets such as the CME Group. Participation in futures trading mandates the possession of a brokerage account that has been duly authorized for futures trading activities.
