How are Checklist scores calculated?

Written by Scott Townshend

Even for ‘qualitative’ Checklist Items, Trev can report these in an objective, quantified manner which is referred to as a Score - and this can be presented at a Checklist Item, Checklist Group or Overall Farm level.

Firstly, some definitions:

  • Weighting - this is the score 0-100 that a Checklist Item is assigned to allow questions to be weighted based on their impotence. For example, a very important Checklist Item might have a Weighting of 100, general Checklist Items might have a Weighting of 50 and a low importance Checklist Item might have a Weighting of 25.

  • Rating - this is a traffic light rating that is assigned to a possible response (or response range) and is presented using the following hierarchy:

    • Poor = red

    • Unsure = blue

    • Ok = amber

    • Good = green

    • Not applicable = dark grey

    • Incomplete = grey outline, white fill

  • Score - this is the score out of 100 that can be assigned to a specific response for a specific Checklist Item. E.g. for the Checklist Item “Do you have any Health & Safety Incidents or Near Misses to report?” a response of “No” might have a Rating of “Good” and an associated Score of 100, whereas a response of “Yes” might have a Rating of “Poor” and an associated Score of 0.

  • Aggregated Score - a combination of the above Rating Score and Weighitng. See example below.

How is Aggregated Score calculated?

An Aggregated Score can be calculated based on the following dimensions:

  • Checklist - Single Checklist Item or Checklist Group(s) or all Checklist Items/Groups

  • Farm - Single farm or selection of farms

  • Date - Single date or customised date range

Example 1: multiple Checklist Items for the same Farm and Date

#

Checklist Item

Weighting

Response

Rating

Rating Score

1

Do you have any Health & Safety Incidents or Near Misses to report?

100

Yes

Poor (red)

0

2

Do you have any new hazards to report?

75

No

Good (green)

100

In Example 1, the Aggregated Score is calculated as follows:

= ( [Weighting1] x [Rating_Score1] + [Weighting2] x [Rating_Score2] ) /

( ( [Weighting1] + [Weighting2] ) x 100 )

= ( 100 x 0 + 75 x 100 ) /

( ( 100 + 75) x 100 )

= 43% and this Aggregated Score would be presented in a red badge as at least one item in this calculation had a 'Poor' (red) response rating.

Example 2: multiple Farms for the same Checklist Item and Date

#

Farm

Weighting

Rating

Rating Score

1

Farm A

100

Yes

Good (green)

100

2

Farm B

100

No

Ok (amber)

50

In Example 2, the Aggregated Score is calculated as follows:

= ( [Weighting1] x [Rating_Score1] + [Weighting2] x [Rating_Score2] ) /

( ( [Weighting1] + [Weighting2] ) x 100 )

= ( 100 x 100 + 100 x 50 ) /

( ( 100 + 100 ) x 100 )

= 75% and this Aggregated Score would be presented in an amber badge as at least one item in this calculation had an 'Ok' (amber) response rating.

Example 3: date range for the same Farm and Checklist Item

#

Checklist Item

Weighting

Rating

Rating Score

1

Report date A

50

No

Ok (amber)

50

2

Report date B

50

Unsure

Unsure (blue)

10

In Example 3, the Aggregated Score is calculated as follows:

= ( [Weighting1] x [Rating_Score1] + [Weighting2] x [Rating_Score2] ) /

( ( [Weighting1] + [Weighting2] ) x 100 )

= ( 50 x 50 + 50 x 10 ) /

( ( 50 + 50) x 100 )

= 30% and this Aggregated Score would be presented in blue badge as at least one item in this calculation had a Unsure (blue) response rating.

Example 4: complex example of all of the above

#

5

In Example 4, the Aggregated Score is calculated as follows:

= ( [Weighting1] x [Rating_Score1] + [Weighting2] x [Rating_Score2] + [Weighting3] x [Rating_Score3] + [Weighting4] x [Rating_Score4] + [Weighting5] x [Rating_Score5] ) /

( ( [Weighting1] + [Weighting2] + [Weighting3] + [Weighting4] + [Weighting5] ) x 100 )

= ( 100 x 0 + 100 x 100 + 75 x 100 + 75 x 50 + 50 x 10 ) /

( ( 100 + 100 + 75 + 75 + 50) x 100 )

= 54% and this Aggregated Score would be presented in a red badge as at least one item in this calculation had a 'Poor' (red) response rating.
