More information about earnings for private tutors

I'm a Tutor article! Learn more about our price bands for private tutors.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

On the private side of the platform, tutors are “self-employed” and set their own tutoring fee from our 5 price bands.

💰 Why does MyTutor use price bands?

We’ve created these bands to:

  • ✅ Give experienced tutors the chance to earn more

  • 🤝 Offer a low starting point to make tuition more accessible to families

  • 🎯 Help parents make quick, confident choices by simplifying pricing

To view your current price band or change it, log into your MyTutor account and visit the My Prices page.

You’ll still set your own price, choosing from 5 bands, and will stay on the same band unless you decide to change it.

Can I change the band after the changes?

You can select a different band you feel is most appropriate for you to charge.

How do I change my band?

To change your price band for private lessons, simply:

  1. Log in to your MyTutor account.

  2. Go to your My Prices page.

  3. Review the full breakdown of the different bands.

  4. Select the new band you'd like to move to and confirm your choice.

This allows you to update your tutoring fee at any time.

How do I get more private work?

To get more private tutoring work on MyTutor, here are the best steps you can take:

✅ Optimise your tutor profile:

  • Boost your profile with a strong bio and a clear profile picture.

  • Add a profile video – this helps parents get a sense of your personality and teaching style.

  • List all the subjects you're qualified to tutor – more subjects = more chances to be matched.

📆 Keep your profile active:

  • Update your availability regularly so parents know when you're free.

  • Respond quickly to messages – tutors who reply within 2 hours are 30% more likely to get booked.

  • Always complete your lesson reports – it shows professionalism and reliability.

How do I make a price band exception after the changes?

As a tutor, the fee you charge for your time may change. This could be due to updates to the available price bands, or perhaps you’ve gained more experience and want to adjust your rate.

This means that, even if the band structure changes, or your fees adjust in the future, the price you set with your customer will remain the same (unless these price bands are removed, and you’d therefore need to make an exception within the new price bands).

Once you set a price exception, it will apply to all future lessons with that customer. This exception will remain in place regardless of any changes to our platform fee or your tutoring fee, ensuring your customer continues to pay the agreed-upon rate.

To do this, log into your account and head to your ‘My Prices’ page. You’ll see the option under‘Creating exceptions for existing students’.
