Use Lock to keep chosen items in place, and Pause editing to stop your student's input for a while.
Locking an item
Open a notebook by clicking the Notebooks icon in the Controls bar, the dark gray strip along the bottom of the call window, right after Share Screen.
Choose the Pointer in the tool rail, down the left side of the notebook, and click the item you want to lock.
Click Lock, the padlock button that is the last button in the panel to the right of the tool rail, after Duplicate and Delete.
To unlock, select the item again and click Unlock in the same place.
A locked item cannot be moved, resized, restyled, retyped, or deleted until you unlock it, by your student or by you. You can still select it, draw over it, and mark its words. Your student can draw over it and mark its words too, but cannot select or change it, and sees "This is locked." if they try to change it.
ℹ️ While a locked item is selected, a small purple padlock appears just outside its top right corner.
Locking or unlocking everything at once
Click ···, the three dots next to the Add page icon in the middle of the top band, to open the page options. In a narrow window, open the More (⋮) menu at the right end of the top band and choose Page options….
Click Lock all items or Unlock all items, below the Move page up and Move page down choices.
Lock all items locks every item in the notebook except blanks you placed with Text field and imported PDF pages, and a message reads "All items locked. Blanks stay open." Items you add afterward start unlocked. Both choices also work in your room while you prepare a template.
Seeing which items are locked
Open the page options as above and click Show locked items.
Click Hide locked items in the same place to turn the outlines off.
A dotted outline appears around every locked item. Only you see it, and it turns off when you close the notebook.
Pausing your student's editing
Start a session with your student and open a notebook.
Click Pause editing, a small pause icon with no words. It is the first button in the group at the right of the top band, just before Import PDF. Point at it to read "Pause Maya's editing," using your student's name.
Click the button again to resume editing.
While editing is paused, the button is purple and a line at the top of your notebook reads "Maya's editing is paused." Your student cannot draw, type, move, or delete anything, and sees "Editing is paused." Their laser pointer still works, and nothing they made is lost.
Editing resumes when you click the button again. It also turns off when you close the notebook, open another one, or the session ends. The button stays in the top band at every window width.
