Identity Verification for Your Neno Account
Identity verification is a mandatory step when opening a business bank account or being added as an account member. This article explains why it's required, how it works, and what to do if you encounter issues.
Why Verification Is Required
As a regulated financial service, Neno (through our banking partner) is legally required to verify the identity of all account holders and key individuals. This is known as KYC (Know Your Customer) and is mandated by:
EU Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Directives — To prevent financial crime
PSD2 (Payment Services Directive) — To ensure secure access to payment accounts
Dutch Wwft (Wet ter voorkoming van witwassen en financieren van terrorisme) — The Netherlands' implementation of EU AML rules
Verification is required for the company's legal representative (director/bestuurder), all Ultimate Beneficial Owners (UBOs) with 25%+ ownership, and any account members who will have access to the banking dashboard.
The Verification Process
When verification is needed, you'll receive a prompt in your Neno dashboard or an email with a secure verification link. The process involves:
Step 1: Document Upload
Upload a clear photo or scan of a valid identity document. Accepted documents are:
Passport — Any valid, non-expired passport
National identity card — EU/EEA national ID cards
Residence permit — Valid EU/EEA residence permits
Driving licence — Valid Dutch driving licences may also be accepted for identity verification
Step 2: Selfie / Liveness Check
Take a live photo or video of your face. This is matched against the photo on your identity document to confirm you are the person on the document.
Step 3: Review
Your documents are reviewed by our banking partner's verification partners. Most verifications complete within a few hours. Some may take up to 2 business days if additional checks are needed.
Company Verification (KYB)
In addition to individual identity verification, your company undergoes Know Your Business (KYB) verification. This includes:
Company registration check — Verifying your KVK (Kamer van Koophandel) registration
UBO identification — Identifying all Ultimate Beneficial Owners with 25%+ ownership or control
Document review — Verifying company documents such as articles of association and shareholder register
Most of this happens automatically during the BV incorporation and onboarding process. You may be asked for additional documents if the automated checks need supplementation.
Troubleshooting Verification Issues
Verification Rejected
Common reasons for rejection and how to fix them:
Blurry or partially visible document — Retake in good lighting with all four corners visible
Expired document — Use a valid, non-expired document
Selfie doesn't match — Ensure good lighting and a clear view of your face
Name mismatch — The name on your ID must match the name on your account
Verification Taking Too Long
Most verifications complete within a few hours. If yours has been pending for more than 2 business days, contact support for a status update.
Document Language
Documents in Dutch, English, French, and German are typically accepted without translation. For documents in other languages, you may be asked to provide a certified translation.
Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)
After identity verification, ongoing transaction security is handled through Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), a PSD2 requirement. When you perform sensitive actions (transfers, login, settings changes), you'll be asked to confirm your identity through a second factor — such as a push notification, SMS code, or biometric confirmation.
This is separate from the one-time identity verification and protects your account on an ongoing basis.
