If you're trying to add a Successor Guardian for your minor children and don't see the person you want in the dropdown menu, there are a few common reasons this may happen.
Common Reasons You Can’t Add a Successor Guardian
1. They Are Already Assigned as the Initial Guardian
A person cannot be listed as both the primary and successor guardian. If you've already chosen someone as the initial guardian, they won’t appear as an option for a successor.
2. They Haven’t Been Added in “Family and Contacts”
To assign someone to any role in your estate plan, they must first be added to your account.
To add them:
Go to the Family and Contacts section from the left-side menu
Click the + button
Fill out their information
Once added, their name will appear in the dropdowns when assigning guardians.
3. They Are Under Age 18
Only individuals who are 18 years or older can serve as guardians. If the birthdate entered shows they are under 18, they will not appear as a selectable option.
