Why is my newsletter not rendering correctly in the test email?

Learn why newsletters may render incorrectly in email clients like Outlook and how to easily resolve formatting issues with images, text, and links using the correct configuration and system settings.

The visual rendering of an email campaign depends on several variables – particularly the recipient's email client (e.g., Microsoft Outlook). Consequently, a 100% consistent display across all platforms cannot be guaranteed.

Our software generates the newsletter using standardized coding and formatting, which you can customize within the editor. The recipient's email client then decodes this data to render the final layout. Because every client interprets code elements differently, this process cannot be fully controlled from the sender's side.

However, you can prevent the most common display errors by applying the following optimal configurations and best practices:

1. The newsletter layout appears distorted

  • Cause: This is usually due to improper formatting of image dimensions.

  • Solution for Desktop View: Always specify the image width in pixels (px) for the desktop version. Using percentages (%) can cause some clients to scale the image based on its native file size rather than the width of the newsletter container.

  • Solution for Mobile/Responsive View: For mobile optimization, image widths should ideally be set to percentages (%). This ensures that the element dynamically scales to fit the smartphone screen.

  • Note on Outlook: Layout distortions are particularly common in Microsoft Outlook. Please note that older versions (such as Outlook 2010 or 2013) use outdated rendering engines, meaning that even optimized settings may not always guarantee a flawless display.

2. Text overflows the container boundaries

  • Cause: The text block width is defined in pixels, and the font size or volume exceeds the dimensions of the surrounding container.

  • Solution: Define the width of text blocks – and preferably all layout elements – in percentages. Setting the value to 100% ensures the text automatically adapts to the full width of the parent frame.

3. Incorrect text wrapping or styling issues

  • Cause: Content was copied and pasted directly from external word processors (such as Microsoft Word). These programs embed hidden, rigid formatting codes that block design modifications and disrupt text wrapping.

  • Solution: Highlight the affected text in the editor and click the trashcan icon (Clear Formatting). This sanitizes the text, allowing styles to be applied correctly and removing non-breaking spaces ( ) that cause poor text wrapping.

4. Hyperlinks display in the wrong color

  • Cause: Some email clients override the link colors defined in your newsletter template, forcing them to display in standard blue. This is driven by the local settings of the recipient's email client.

  • Solution: This behavior cannot be altered from the editor, as it depends entirely on the individual configuration of the recipient's software.
