What is the Difference Between Total and Unique Opens?

Learn how email opens are tracked via tracking pixels and discover the differences between total opens, unique opens, and the unique open rate, as well as the impact of modern privacy features like Apple's Mail Privacy Protection.

Technical Functionality of Open Tracking

Email opens are tracked using a technical method known as an open or tracking pixel. This is a tiny, invisible image file embedded within the newsletter. When the recipient's email client requests and loads this pixel from our servers, an "open" event is recorded. This measurement triggers regardless of whether the email is viewed in a preview pane or opened in full-screen mode.

Important Tracking Limitations: Because this tracking method relies entirely on image rendering, opens can only be recorded if the recipient enables image display in their email client. Furthermore, advanced privacy features—such as Apple's Mail Privacy Protection and private relays—can interfere with tracking accuracy. These systems often pre-load images automatically via proxy servers or mask user IP addresses, which can prevent opens from being accurately detected or attributed.

Understanding the Metrics in Your Report

In the performance report of your newsletter, the "Opens" tab provides a comprehensive breakdown of your data. It is important to distinguish between the following metrics:

  • Unique Opens: This metric shows how many individual recipients opened your email. Each recipient is counted only once, regardless of how many times they re-open the message.

  • Total Opens: This represents the aggregate sum of every single open event recorded. If a single recipient opens the newsletter multiple times, each instance is added to this total.

  • Unique Open Rate: This percentage measures the ratio between unique opens and successfully delivered emails. It indicates the exact percentage of reached recipients who interacted with your email.

Additional Behavioral Insights

Directly beneath these core performance indicators, the report features detailed breakdowns showing which device types (Desktop, Mobile, Tablet) and which specific email clients were used to view your newsletter.
